Re: Andrea Jaeger's career - all results in singles and doubles !

I am pretty sure that match is 1982 as well. I believe it was even sponsored by McDonald's (!). It was a fast indoor court and Martina ran away with the first set, but Andrea came back in the second set, I think even serving an ace at set point (and on a second serve?). She plays a very adventurous, all-court game, which I think was the only way to go around the early 1980s, i.e. by pursuing a "third way" - trying to out-rally Evert from the baseline was a non-starter, while her serve and volley was never going to be of the Martina standard, so the way to go was wide serves, lots of topspin and then try and come in and finish off the point. That was the way Hana played and she was occasionally able to pull off big wins against the Martina-Chris duopoly in the 1980s. Andrea could also, like Hana, occasionally come out with the most outrageous shots (I remember a good fourth-round match at Wimbledon against Carling Bassett in 1983), especially when she had her back to the wall. That match against Martina is as rare as hen's teeth, because Martina is beaten fair and square, she does not beat herself, and that did not happen a lot (if at all) in the 1982-84 period! I like the interview at the end, when Andrea says she and her sister Suzy are planning to go out to some club (probably the Aussie equivalent of "Studio 54") and pick up a couple of guys... quite the Evert clone!

Re: Andrea Jaeger's career - all results in singles and doubles !

In retrospect, I think Andrea Jaeger's best chance to win a major singles title might have been at the 1981 French Open, when she lost a close semi-final to Sylvia Hanika, 6-4 in the third set. If she had won, Jaeger would have played Hana Mandlikova in the final, the latter having beaten Chris Evert-Lloyd in the other semi-final. Jaeger would probably have had at least a fifty per cent chance of winning the final in question against the unpredictable Mandlikova.

Hana was a better player than Andrea. She also was in the midst of a 5 match win streak vs her at the time. She beat Hanika who had beaten Andrea in straight sets in the final. She had just beaten Evert in straight sets. She would have won.

Here's a link to the head-to-head between Andrea Jaeger and Hana Mandlikova:

Thanks for that. So Andrea did get one more win over Hana going into the 81 French I guess. Still Hana won the vast majority of their matches in 1980-1981. She was playing very well at the 81 French as evidenced by her straight sets upset of Evert and straight sets final victory. So Andrea's chances would have still been only 25% at most I estimate. However given her other times reaching that far, yes it would be her best chance of a slam she would ever have.

How did she do at the 83 French. That might have been a good chance for her too with Navratilova out, Evert in lackluster form for her that year, and such a weak field at the final stages.

Re: Andrea Jaeger's career - all results in singles and doubles !

Andrea and her sister Susy met at least once in a non-junior event. Susy beat Andrea in the 2R of the St Joseph's USTA Penn event. This was part of a satellite summer circuit. The 1980 Avon Media Guide on page 93 states that Susy was 9-0 vs Andrea. Presumably this dated back to their early junior days.

Robert1 used to ran a website dedicated to Andrea, it is unfortunatelly offline now. Anyone remembers the URL? Recently I was wondering if we could have its original link, we should reach it through web.archíve website.
And where is Robert anyway? He was last seen on board in 2007. (I miss those "old" main-members from Blast.)
