Unknown tennis tournament group photo from 1884. A player who looks like May LANGRISHE is on the far right. This photo is from Wimbledon, where May entered in 1885 (a draw of 10) and 1891 (draw of 9). Could it be 1885 at Wimbledon?

Original description: "Prize Winners at Exmouth, 1885." Some Persons: back row (from left): 2nd (with all white shirt): William Renshaw (1861-1904) 4th: Charles Lacy Sweet (1861-92) 5th or 6th: James Dwight (1852-1917) 8th (in center, with all white shirt and hat): Charlotte "Lottie" Dod (1871-1960) 9th (right from Dod, with hat): Ernest de Sylly Hamilton Browne (1855-1946) right from Dod, again with all white shirt and hat: Blanche Bingley Hillyard (1863-1946) first woman sitting from right (shirt with stripes): Miss Gurney (very likely also tennis player, I don't know more about her) There is also a "J. Baldwin" noted on the right between Miss Bingley and Miss Gurney. I can't identify him or her.

"The mixed doubles champions 1886: Mr. W. [William] Renshaw and Miss [Blanche] BINGLEY."




Gold bracelet given to Blanche Bingley by the All England Lawn Tennis Club as the prize for winning the 1886 Wimbledon Women's Singles Championship. It is engraved: "All England Championship 1886". It has been exhibited at the Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Museum.



Ladies tennis shoes made of leather and rubber

The photograph of the female lawn tennis players was taken at the 1888 edition of the Irish Lawn Tennis Championships, held in Fitzwilliam Square, Dublin. It features the following players:

Pics From 1880's With No Specific Dates.

Blanche BINGLEY-later Mrs Hillyard. Despite the serious pose she was said to have a very wry sense of humour.



Tennis dress-circa 1884 to 1886. The racquets on the belt make this dress unique.



Arlington Lawn Tennis Club, august 15th 1882 ( date unsure... ).

Lottie DOD in 1890. The five time Wimbledon champion never lost a match at the Championships.

The Roosevelts and Misses Burdette and Helen HOMANS just after match.


The Roosevelt sisters (probably on the right were US doubles champions.
