Re: Eleanor GOSS

Goss certainly had staying power--12 years after her #4 US rating in 1918 she was still in the US top ten.

Given her doubles record my guess is she was better than most women at net.

The most controversial moment in Eleanor's career came at Forest Hills in 1921. World #1 Suzanne Lenglen came to Forest Hills that year to capture the US Nationals.

American sentiment was roused to a fever pitch to repel the invader. Molla Mallory was the main American standing in Lenglen's way, but May Suton Bundy (1904 US winner!) and Mary K Browne (winner from 1912 to 1914) both came out of retirement to assist.

There was no seeding in those days. When the draw was published the shock was intense-for Lenglen had drawn Eleanor Goss (US #5) in the first round and Molla Mallory in the second.

Surely the French would have thrown names back in the hat and redid the draw! putting Mallort and Lenglen on opposite ends of the draw would have brought horses out for the final. Instead they would met early in the week.

Goss was no pushover, but Suzanne came out to Forest Hills with no fear, anticipating a good practice for her next match. When she arrived the diva found that Miss Goss had defaulted. A crowd of 7,000 was eager to see Lenglen. Would she and Mallory consent to play each other in order to please the crowd?

Suzanne went out on court and was throttled by Molla in front of a stunned audience. After losing a 6-1 set she retired.

Had Goss really been ill? Some American writers (including the respected Al Laney) suggested that the Forest Hills officials had pressured Eleanor to default-in effect setting Suzanne up to fail as she had next to no time for match practice or to adapt to American conditions.

The French press seized on the stories suggesting a conspiracy.

Re: Eleanor GOSS

I have discoved a bit more on Goss. Fairly active until 1934, she was still single in June of 1934, By 20 November she was married to E.G. (or C. E) Lanning, and playing in the Sears Cup.

By 1937 she was based in Europe-her last known event was at Forest Hills in 1939. Mrs Lanning, listed as being from England, defaulted.
