What If!?: Evert Vs Austin....

HI EVERYONE! just been thinking about this topic and what if..

as we know evert and austin played only 17 times, and very infrequently after evert came back from her winter/spring sabbatical in 1980.. in fact, once she came back from that time until their last match in late 1982, they only played 5 times. evert leading 3-2 (80 u.s. open semi, 1981 round robin avon championship,82 avon championship wins for evert, 81 canadian open and 81 avon championship rematch)..

however, (AND THIS IS THE POINT OF THIS TOPIC THREAD) THEY COULD AND PERHAPS SHOULD HAVE MET A FEW MORE TIMES.....

THEY WERE SCHEDULED AND SEEDED TO MEET AT THE 1981 WIMBLEDON SEMI (AUSTIN LOST TO SHRIVER FOR THE 1ST TIME WHO CONSEQUENTLY LOST TO EVERT), THE 1982 WIMBLEDON SEMI (AUSTIN LOST TO KING FOR THE FIRST TIME AND KING CONSEQUENTLY LOST TO EVERT), THE 1982 U.S. OPEN (AUSTIN LOST TO MANDLIKOVA WHO CONSEQUENTLY LOST TO EVERT) CAN'T REALLY COUNT THE 1981 U.S. OPEN WHERE EVERT LOST TO NAVRATILOVA WHO LOST TO AUSTIN IN THE FINAL SINCE THEY WERE NOT "SEEDED' to meet unless both happen to reach the final....OR the 1980 wimbledon where evert lost to goolagong who beat austin in the semis since evert was not seeded or drawn to meet austin since it was supposed to be 1 and 2 austin and navratilova who were supposed to meet in the final..

so anyway, i was curious as to what everyone thinks would have been the outcome of these matches that could of, should of happened?!....

evert meeting austin in the semis at 81 wimbledon? their first (and only second match ever )match on grass since the 1977 3rd rounder austin at only 14 making her debut....

this would have been the 1st match since evert beat austin at the u.s. open the year before... played on grass, and all the dynamics of that.. the psychological mental aspect of the 1st match after evert's u.s. open win, etcetera...

evert meeting austin at the 82 wimbledon semi and 82 us open? once again, 1982 tracy vs 82 chrissie on grass, 82 tracy vs 82 chrissie on hard courts...

82 chris played poorly the first 6 months but stellar the last 6 months, austin played sporadically with mixed results, however, once again how much or how little would any of this play into the minds and the winning whenever austin and evert mixed it up...no matter what at the time their respective level was at..

thoughts everyone! i know it's all conjecture!...

Re: What If!?: Evert Vs Austin....

Of them all, I would give Austin the best chance at Wimbledon '81, if only because the relevance of the surface being grass would have been neutralized to quite an extent because both were baseliners. I would also guess that Tracy would've still been in Chrissie's head to a degree as evidenced by their matches at the Canadian Open and the Season Ending Championships later that year.

Still, I think Chris was the better grass court player of the two, as she had a bit more variety and flexibility in her game overall and she would have had to feel pretty good about her chances after beating Tracy on hardcourts at the Open the previous year. Also she was playing very good tennis at Wimbledon '81 so I'd still give her the edge overall and have her win in 3.

The matches in '82 I would easily give to Chrissie, because Tracy was just not the same player that year. Tracy's game needed a lot of repetition and her confidence rested on knowing her strokes were secure, I think her results in '82 speak to an inability to have her strokes honed to the point that she felt mentally secure going into big matches and I just don't think she believed in herself the way she used to. The mental component was a huge factor for both Chris and Tracy and not being able to prepare as well as she would have liked to effected Tracy's confidence a great deal, so I really don't see her challenging Chris in '82 at all.

That's what she said!!!

Oh, how I hate the what if game. But Evert vs Austin........it's irresistible!

1981 Wimbledon Semi: Damn that Shriver woman! Why'd she have knock off the pipsqueek then! Oh how I wanted another Evert thrashing of Austin at the Big W! And yup this was gonna be another! Chris was fiercely determined to win the 1981 Wimbledon title. Nobody, not no how was Austin going to beat her. First, this was a surface that I felt clearly favored Evert. Chris had more experience, more adaptability, and more confidence. in early July 1981 Austin simply didn't have the confidence level she had a year prior, or even a few months later when she won the US Open. An actual meeting then might have been close, like 6-4,6-4. But this was one that Evert was going to win, no matter what.

1981 US Open final. After the bogusly seeded #2 Jaeger went down in the 2R, the real # 2 seed Austin skipped to the final. Meanwhile, Chris played Martina in that thrilling semi. Even if Chris held on to win that match, she was playing on a sore knee. Plus it was a mentally draining match played the day before the final. Plus it would have been the 4th year in a row in which the two would have played at the Open. Plus it was in an odd numbered year (Chris won in the even numbered years). Plus Chris won the big "revenge" match in the semis the year before. Plus Tracy beat Chris a few weeks prior in Canada in straight sets. So........conjecture about who would have won a 1981 US OPen final.........as a true Chrissie fan, well, I just can't

A 1982 Wimbledon semi ? : Damn that King woman! *Another* lost opportunity for Chrissie to whallop Tracy at the Big W. I mean if BJ was able to beat Austin, you think Chris couldn't? Of course not. Again, Austin simply didn't have the confidence to win big matches at this point in her career, It would have been a massacre - perhaps not as bad as their Toyota series match later in the year. But Chris would have won comfortably, like 6-3,6-2.

A 1982 US Open final meeting? This would have been a huge stretch under many circumstances. Shriver's defeat of Martina significantly cleared the way. So even if Tracy managed to beat Hana, she next faces Shriver. Both would revel in the opportunity. Tracy might have been buoyed by a win over Hana, and felt it was her birthright to make Pam see red. But Pam would have been stoked to grab another big scalp. But after Tracy garnering another big win over Pam in the semis, I see her as being too mentally fried to challenge a super determined and focused Evert in the final. Chris was brilliant in thrashing a tough Jaeger in the semis. A final round encounter in an even numbered year? Oh yeah, it would have been Chris handily: 6-4,6-1.

Chris and Tracy were seeded 1 and 2 at the Australian. Tracy of course failed to live up to her # 2 seed. And it was grass, so who would have smoked who? Why Chris would have been puffing with glee at the sight of Austin across the net in an Aussie final. We can easily say 6-3,6-3 would have been Chrissie's glee, in that conjecture of a match!

As for Chris playing poorly for the first 6 months of 1982? Hmmmmm.....she skipped most of the indoor season, so she was a little rusty. Some matches were closer than results from 1981. But, Chris lost 4 times through July 1982: one to a pumped up MArtina at Wimbledon (Chris had an opportunity in that one) and three to an inspired Andrea Jaeger, in what was perhaps the best and most consistent Jaeger was in her career. And Chris handily beat Andrea a few times in early 1982 as well. I am sure that every pro player would like to have been playing as "poorly" as Chris did with the same results!
