My World Rankings

World Rankings and stats have always excited me (hey-I don't get out much ever since I started following tennis in 1977. Back in those days
magazine rankings were just as valued as computer rankings, and usually were "better" IMO.

After playing around with numbers I eventually came up with my own ranking system. The beauty of my rankings are this-the point values don't go up or down from year to year like different computer rankings.
---------------------------------------------------------------
I should imagine most of you aren't too intersted in my ranking lists, but maybe the stats will stimulate some memories/opinions/ or discussions. I'll try to post a year a week.

11. Zvereva 266 42-15 (2-17)

16. Tauziat 190 48-21 1 of 21
*Notes:

An exciting year that came down to the wire-with Graf the most consistent by far. Graf led the tour in match wins at 72 and made 3 grand slam finals. Monica got the slightest edge due to two factors-she was the only woman to win two majors (she won the Virginia Slims year-end event) and she was 2-0 vs. Graf.

Navratilova was a clear #3. Had Sabatini won the Slims she would have been at 3, but with only 2 event wins to 6 for Martina and a 2-0 head to head for Martina there was significant gap.

This was probably Austria's best year ever as a nation, with two women
(Paulus and Wiesner) in the top 16.
_______________________________________________

Other stats:

Most singles wins on tour: Graf 72
Most doubles wins on tour: Novotna-60
Most combined wins: Novotna-103, Sukova-100

Titles on all surfaces: Navratilova

Events won: Singles:Graf (10) Doubles:Sukova (10)
Highest combined rank:Navratilova (#3 singles,#4 dubs).

Longest match: Curiously, no match on tour went 40 games more.

*Graf had a large 66 consecutive match win streak from 1989 broken at Berlin by Seles.
__________________________________________________ ___

*Average events entered for top 10 was 15.3
*only 2 defaults and 1 retirement for the entire top ten! Fernandez and K.Malleva each defeaulted once and Sanchez retired in Fed Cup.

*Head to head
1. The top ten met 72 times.
2. Seles (at 12-2) had the best percentage record
3. Graf had the most top ten wins at 17-5. All
of Graf's 5 defeats came to top ten women, while 4 of Seles' 6 loses

Well so far I agree with that list. Steffi was only more consistent that year, Monica was better.

steffi didn't lose 15 matches in 1990.

In the middle of the night
I go walking in my sleep
Through the desert of the truth
To the river so deep
We all end in the ocean
We all start in the streams
We're all carried along
By the river of dreams
In the middle of the night

Irma-The number you're reading (10-15) is the number of events won to events played. Thus (10-15)=10 events won out of 15 played.

Welcome Rollo but as you can see for some reason you have to press the space bar to get some of them into the right place. Eventually they go in, it's just trial and error.

It looks good though, thanks for the list

You taught an old dog a new trick. Now if I can learn how to use my scanner I'll post all my old tennis pics.

i find it ing that the most events played there was Nathalie Tauziat at 21 events whereas these days someone like Dokic could be playing up to 28/29 events!!!
