Here's something I've never realized about Monica's record before:
She won the very first Final she ever played, beating one of the game's all-time greats.
She won the very first Grand Slam Final she ever played, beating one of the game's all-time greats.
At 15, she beat Christ Evert 3-6 6-1 6-4, in the 1989 Virginia Slims of Houston Final, her first ever Final.
At 16, she beat Steffi Graf 7-6 6-4 in the 1990 French Open Final, her first ever Grand Slam Final.
Most people at that age would have had their knees knocking together at the thought of playing in their first Finals, especially a Grand Slam Final, and especially considering whom the opponents were. But Monica simply stepped onto the court and played ball. I just thought that was really outstanding.
