Re: Biographies of Female Tennis Players

HERR, "SUZIE" (Suzanne Herr)
Born circa 1935
Died 03 March 1990
Married Marvin Feldman, 1960
Nickames: "Suzie" or "Susie"
[Active in the 1950s]

Despite spelling her name with a "z' she was often listed as "Susie" Herr rather than "Suzie". As suzanne was her formal name "Suzie" is doubtless correct. The red headed Floridian prodigy never lived up to the high expectations set on her shoulders when young, but remained a fixture in the Sunshine State throughout the 1950s.

Herr entered the US Nationals at Forest Hills 3 times, 1951, 1953, and 1954. She won 1 singles match and lost 3.

[Her obituary from the Miami Herald]

Quote:
SUZANNE HERR FELDMAN, TENNIS PLAYER
The Miami Herald
Sunday, March 4, 1990
JIM MARTZ

Suzanne Herr Feldman, a tennis pro who lived in Dade and Broward counties, died Saturday in Hollywood after a 4 1/2-year battle with cancer.

She was 55.

Her father, Eddie Herr, founded the Orange Bowl tennis match at Flamingo Park in Miami Beach in 1948 because his daughter Suzanne and her friends needed tournament competition.

Columnist and television commentator Bud Collins wrote in World Tennis magazine in 1978 that "Suzie Herr launched hundreds of tennis players toward better times" at the Orange Bowl match, which today is recognized as the world's premier junior tennis event.

In 1950, 15-year-olds Suzanne Herr of Miami Beach, Maureen Connolly of California and Karol Fageros of Miami played in the U.S. Lawn Tennis Association Intersectionals in Philadelphia.

All three went on to pro tennis careers. Suzanne Herr Feldman earned a No. 14 national junior ranking and played three years on the pro tour; Maureen Connolly Brinker won Wimbledon and the U.S. National championships; and Karol Fageros Short earned a top-10 ranking and played in the Wightman Cup.

They had something else in common: All three died of cancer. Mrs. Brinker died in 1969, Mrs. Short in 1988.

Mrs. Feldman first played at Forest Hills when she was 16 and won her first match. She later worked as a teaching pro at Aventura, Hillcrest in Hollywood and Pembroke Lakes in Pembroke Pines.

She is survived by her father, Eddie Herr, who also founded the Sunshine Cup and Continental Players Cup junior tournaments; her husband Dr. Marvin Feldman, a radiologist; a daughter, Karen, a lawyer in New York City; and a son, Glenn, a lawyer in Miami.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Levitt-Weinstein Beth David Chapel and interment will be at Beth El Cemetery, both in Hollywood

Re: Biographies of Female Tennis Players

HEXTALL, MURIEL (nee Muriel Vera Ledger)
United Kingdom
Born circa November-December 1889 in Sevenoaks, Kent, England
Died circa May 1952 in Sussex, England
Married Henry Cecil Hextall (1888-Sept 1967), circa May-June 1913 in Kensington, London, England
Active in the 1920s.

Usually listed as Mrs HC Hextall. Henry Cecil fought in the Great War and was a cricket player of note. He was listed a single in the 1911 census. The first mention of Mrs HC was in 1919. Henry married a Clare E Marten in March of 1953, but this is clearly a remarriage. Mrs Hextall was also involved in dog breeding. The couple settled in Sussex.

Joan Hextall, another tennis player, was her sister-in-law.

Re: Biographies of Female Tennis Players

HICKMAN, NORAH (Norah Theresa Hickman)
South Africa
Born 19 August 1874 in Durban
Died 30 September 1960 in Pietermaritzburg
Married Roland Henry Miller on 17 March 1903 in Kwelegha, Cape Colony
[Active from 1890 to 1907]

Titles

3 time South African Champion (1897-1899) and RU in 1907
9 time Natal Champion (1890, 1894-1896,1898-1899, 1902, 1905, 1906) and RU in 1892, 1907 and 1908.

Norah first won Natal in 1890, followed almost a decade later by even greater victories at the South African Championships three years running from 1897 and 1899. Who knows how many titles she could have won, as the Boer War of 1900 meant the South African Championships were not held again until 1903-the year of her marriage.

Grand as her 3 national titles were, Norah ruled ladies tennis in Natal as if it were her own property. Her upset win over Mabel Grant in 1890 is the first glimpse we get of Norah-still a teen of some 16 years.

She would repeat as the Natal champion in 1905 and 1906 as Mrs R. H. Miller.

In 1907 Mrs Miller lost a 3 set final in the South African Championships. Already a mother, her finals loss at the Natal event in 1908 may have been her swan song in the sport.

Norah was the tenth of the fourteen children of Edward Hoste Hickman, a native of Worcestershire, England, and Johanna Dorothea Hickman (née Benningfield).

She had at least 2 children. Her daughter Winifred Norah Miller (later Lowe) born in 1906, was a RU at the South African Championships 5 times-a unique mother-daughter record.
