Re: Biographies of Female Tennis Players

DACE, VERA (Vera Sybil Dace)
United Kingdom
Born 03 December 1921 in Southwark, London
Died 09 July 1995
Married Arthur H “Tommy” (AKA “Thomo’) Thomas, August 1947
Lefthanded
[Active 1946-1960]

Slam summary

Played Wimbledon from 1946-1948, 1951-53, and 1955-1960. Her overall record was 6 wins and 11 defeats, defaulting in 1955. She made the 3R in 1952.

Entered the French Championship in 1946.

Dace was a member of the Beckenham Club.

She is best known as a table tennis player, winning the world doubles title and runner-up in singles in 1948. Husband played cricket. A geneology website indicates they had a daughter. she missed the Championships in 1954, so perhaps this is the year of her daughter's birth.

From a newspaper report of 25 April 1947: "Miss Vera Dace, British tennis star and co-holder of the world table tennis title for women's doubles, is to marry Mr Arthur H. Thomas, a well-known Beckenham sportsman. Miss Dace, a south London [?] girl, learnt her tennis by back garden practice, and her table tennis by playing in local halls. She is a left-hander, at present competing in the Surrey Hard Court Championships.

"This tennis romance began six weeks ago when Miss Dace and Mr Thomas met at Bromley Hill Squash Club [in London]. They were introduced by Brian Phillips, one of the best squash racket players in the country."

Her DBB comes from infomation obtained via ancestry.com and includes voter registration (with address) and marriage information.

Latterly living in Bognor Regis, West Sussex.

Probate was in Brighton.

Re: Biographies of Female Tennis Players

DAHL, “CARO” (Caroline Lucia Maria Peter)
Norway
Born: October 17, 1890 in İstanbul, İstanbul, Turkey
Died: January 21, 1979 in Aker, Oslo, Norway
Married Knud Dahl in 1913
[Active 1913-1925]

Height: 5'1" (156 cm)
Affiliations: Oslo Tennisklubb, Oslo

Active as early as 1913, when she competed at the World Hard Courts in Paris. Norweigian champion in 1919-20,1923-25. Competed in 1920 and 1924 Olympics.

Dahl was the daughter of Joachim Peter who ran a business in Constantinople and Silvie Pessi (1863-1929). She was raised in Zurich, Switzerland and in 1913 was married to Knud Dahl (1891-1983) later director of Myrens Workshop, who was a student in Zurich, graduating in 1913. Knud later became president and honorary member of the Norwegian Tennis Association. From 1915 to 1917 the Dahls lived in the United States, returning to Norway to settle in Christiania. Their son Knud Dahl jr. was also active in tennis.

When she competed in the US during the 1917 season papers described her as "The Swiss Champion". She made the quarterfinals, where Eleanora Sears defeated her 6-2 6-4. Dahl packed a good amount of power into her baseline based game according to papers, but the superior net skills of Sears proved decisive.

The New York Times gives us a description of her style of play ("BAY STATE GIRL THRILLS GALLERY." New York Times (1857-1922), Jun 20, 1917, pp. 8.)

Quote:
The foreigner is short on height but long on court craft, and while she seems to favor the back court style of play, she shows no hesitancy in going for the net position when she feels the time is ripe

Re: Biographies of Female Tennis Players

DANET, "MARIE" (nee Augustine Marcelle Engrand)
France
Born circa 1880
Died ???? [after 1934]
Married Eugène Charles "Henri" Danet on 25 April 1898 in Paris
[Active 1910-1934]

In 1912, Jeanne Matthey won the women's single title at the Closed French Championships for the fourth consecutive and last time. In the Challenge Round she defeated Marie Danet 6-2 7-5. This is the first time we encounter Mme Danet in a tennis tournament.

Marie’s son Roger (Roger Marie Robert Danet), born 22 February 1899 often played mixed doubles with Suzanne Lenglen. They were so close that at one point it was rumoured the pair were engaged to be married. Still active in the 1920s, Mme Danet well past her prime in 1932, when she entered the French Championships.

The following link indicates that Henri and Marie Danet were the parents of Roger Danet, one of France's top lawn tennis players of the 1920s (his exact date of birth of is 22 February 1899, ten months after his parent's wedding): Roger DANET - Arbre généalogique Cédric TOUVET - Geneanet
