Re: The Jennifer Capriati Appreciation Thread
I've always been a fan of Jennifer's, and enjoyed her feisty on-court competitive spirit. There was one incident that I thought was very funny, and stands out: her 1991 US Open Quarterfinal match against Gabriela Sabatini. Whenever Sabatini was getting ready to serve, Jennifer would squeak her sneakers incessantly. The tactic worked, as Sabatini was unnerved by Jennifer's strategy, committing numerous double faults in the process. As a result, Jennnifer disposed of Sabatini in straight sets, including a 2nd set tiebreak as Sabatini cracked under the pressure. To Sabatini's credit, she never used Jenn's squeaking as an excuse for losing. In my opinion, Jennifer would have beaten Sabatini in that match, whether she made noise with her sneakers or not. Does anyone else recall this match?. Your thoughts?.
