Re: Virginia Ruzici...

It really wasn’t seen that way in 1978 because it wasn’t gamesmanship or fakery at all. Evonne was injured and taking Novocain and steroid injections to play. I think they wore off in the Ruzici match and some people have claimed she got another injection on court, but I don’t think anyone can verify that. It was written in all the papers that Roger Cawley simply ran out on court and told Evonne to quit, and comforted her. She somehow continued after a time out and according to World Tennis began hitting the ball very cleanly, not making any errors, whilst Virginia began making endless errors. I think everyone was in shock when Evonne screamed and assumed the match was over. Her whole comeback after having a child the year before was geared toward Wimbledon and somehow she fought through the pain. When her Achilles went out in the next match she was slightly leading the eventual champion Martina Navratilova, Evonne was just that good, even injured. But she never cheated, never exhibited any gamesmanship or tomfoolery. It just wasn’t in her nature.

God, I wonder how much fun Evonne would have been had she did have a little killer mean streak! Ha!
