Re: Hilde Krahwinkel Sperling
Here is my raw translation of a short fragment from Jadwiga Jedrzejowska's autobiography called "I was born on the tennis court", it's about her meeting with Hilde Krahwinkel-Sperling in 1948:
"(...) In July I was invited to participate in the Swedish International Championships in Baastad. When I arrived there, the first person I met was Hilde Krahwinkel-Sperling ! Despite our rivalry lasting so many years, we were pleased to see each other again. We fell into each other's arms.
- Poor Jadwiga, you had to suffer so much during the war ! What a disaster is a war !
I had to tell her about everything with details.
- Oh, how much I was happier than you - sighed Hilde - I didn't experience the disasters of war, I lived a common life, and I could play as much tennis as I wanted.
There was a tough competition in the Baastad tournament. (...) In the final I had to fight versus, I don't know how many times I had played against her in my life, Hilde Krahwinkel-Sperling. (...) The match started. Hilde attacked using long shots, I immediately counter-attacked and after a long duel I won the first set 8-6. But when I was hitting the winning ball, I understood that I was very exhausted. Hilde was 6 war years ahead of me. Then I lost two remaining sets 0-6, 1-6."
