Interesting to note that (if my results are correct?) between losing to Aussem in the 1931 Wimbledon final and losing to Jacobs in the 1936 Wimbledon final she was undefeated in final matches and had won 27 straight finals going into the 1936 Wimbledon final. compare this to other champions and apart from lenglen who after 1919 never lost a final (excluding walkovers which dont count therefore won 70 finals) only Court had a better record with 31 straight final wins (between 1961 and 1963).

I also have Elizabeth Ryan winning 26 straight finals between 1924 and 1926 but dont have her complete record and am missing 35 tournament wins.
Yet another apparent record for Court-I should stop being surprised. I wonder how long Hilde's clay court win streak was. Suzanne Lenglen beat Evert's 125, but Hilde may top it too. I noticed you had Simone Mathieu winning 15 straight Riviera events one year-that must put her up there as well-though short of 100.

Andrew Tas-would you be interested in doing Ryan's results thread? you have access to all those old results we don't. I'd pitch in with her US results, they can be dug up via the New York Times and American Lawn Tennis.

Re: Hilde Krahwinkel Sperling

Surely when you consider some of the players who have made it there it is iniquitous that Hilde was never inducted into ITHOF?

Re: Hilde Krahwinkel Sperling

I have to think that her time will come very soon. Simone Mathieu, a contemporary with fairly similar stats got in due to the veteran's committee (or whatever it's called) a year ago. Mathieu was a victim of Sperling in her French wins, but had a superior doubles record. I have to think Sperling has to be close behind.

Also, the ITHOF got off on the wrong foot. The organization started as an American Tennis Hall of Fame, which meant many American pioneers with inferior records got in in the early days. Unfortunately, some international greats have been left out and will have to be honored posthumously.

Re: Hilde Krahwinkel Sperling

Is there a beneath-the-surface suspicion of Sperling because she was originally German and participated in the Danish national championships while that country was occupied by Germany during World War II?

I was going to ask that question if she did do that. I was watching either the women's semi's or finals talking about Justine and her multiple wins at the French being 3. NBC put a graphic about all the players who have won three Evert 7, Graf 6, Court 6, Seles, Sanchez 3 and Hilde won 3 French Opens but is not in the Hall.

Didn't Lenglen win quite a few titles at the French? (Yes, I know that the French Championships were open to French nationals only in the early part of the 20th century, but still...)

Oh, and Rev Mags has five titles at the French, not six.

Best left-right combination by a German (and that includes Max Schmeling): Steffi Graf. All she did in 1987 was knock Navratilova out of #1 and try to knock Evert out of the sport. (Mike Lupica in "The Best and Worst of Tennis in 1987", World Tennis)

"A couple of years ago, we nicknamed Steffi Graf's forehand 'Jaws'. And that music would go perfectly when she starts running in to the net, swarming on that little ball." (JoAnne Russell, during the 1988 Wimbledon final between Graf and Navratilova)

The official line is that the French doesn't count as a Slam until 1925 when it became open to world players.

Re: Hilde Krahwinkel Sperling

Some of us count the World Hard Court Championships before 1925 as the fourth Grand Slam tournament.

Re: Hilde Krahwinkel Sperling

Bumping this thread up to add a lot more on Fru Sperling-we need pictures as well!

This is Hilde with Baron Gottfried Von Cramm

The photo comes from a Danish webpage that includes tow drawings of Hilde by German Artist Emil Stumpp. If the translation is correct it states he "Courted" her.

Re: Hilde Krahwinkel Sperling

I've confirmed at least 87 title wins for Hilde (see post #27 on page 2)
https://www.tennisforum.com/showpost....1&postcount=27

One German source puts the total at 132.

Thanks to Andrew Tas for first working on Hilde. Also thanks to Jimbo for his Tournaments thread. It makes compiling a title list easier.
The yearly results are still a mess, so I'll try and work on that next.

Re: Hilde Krahwinkel Sperling

Helen Jacobs devoted a chapter to Hilde in her book Gallery of Champions. (page 39-55)

Jacobs ranks 15 women champions in her book. Hilde is ranked #3, behind only Suzanne Lenglen and Helen Wills. Jacobs puts her ahead of Tennis Hall of Fame members Alice Marble (4), Dorothy Round (5), Molla Mallory (6), Pauline Betz (7), Simone Mathieu (8), Cilli Aussem (9) and Sarah Palfrey Cooke (10).

Yet Sperling is the only one of the list NOT to be in the International Tennis Hall of Fame.

Hilde Krahwinkel Sperling

page 39

The first time I saw Hilde Sperling (then Krhawinkel) play tennis was in 1931 in a quarter-final match at Wimbledon against Dorothy Round, one of the leading English contestants. I walked over to Court No 1, which is a sort of second Centre-Court at the All-England Club. I had never heard much of Hilde's game although I knew she was ranked third in Germany behind Cilli Aussem and Marie Louise Horn. The possibility that she would defeat Dorothy Round was too remote to consider. I had played Dorothy Round and I knew her game well enough to to obviate the necessity of "scouting' her. The game of the German player would be interesting to see.

When I sat down in the stands and began to concentrate on the match my first reaction was, "This will be only a matter of minutes." If Hilde was number three in Germany, what could number four be like! Hilde's game could not be described in any orthodox fashion. Her forehand drive began at approximately the height of her knees, the racquet dropped well below the wrist, continued upward and over the ball. Where her feet were placed I think she neither knew nor cared. Her backhand was slightly more orthodox, for it, at least, began somewhere on a level with the ball, and continued to a logical follow-through. It was her volley, service and overhead that defied all the tenets of first class lawn tennis. These strokes only resulted in delivery and stroking of (page 40)

Page 40

….. Height and limb were two of her greatest assets. Where the average woman player covered the baseline in five strides, Hilde covered it in three. To lob against her required a shot of sufficient height and depth to evade the reach of the average man; and to pass her along the sidelines meant eluding a racquet that appeared to extend across the alley.
---Bill Tilden wrote in 1938, “She is one od the best yet most hopeless looking tennis players I have ever seen. Her game is awkward in the extreme, limited to cramped unorthodox ground strokes without volley or smash to aid her, yet she has been the most consistent winner in women’s tennis each year since 1934. She is another proof that great tennis truth that it is where and when you hit a tennis ball, not how, that wins matches.”

When Hilde and I walked onto Centre Court for our semifinal match I felt confident of winning. I soon discovered, however, that Bill Tilden’s analysis of her game was not entirely accurate. Hilde may not have volleyed or smashed, in his opinion, because she did not execute these strokes in traditional style; but when the ball came from her racquet overhead, it landed unmistakenly with pace and placement, regardless of style, and although she volleyed without semblance of form, the net returns were all too frequently winners.

Page 42

…Before her tennis career began, Hilde injured the ligaments in the fourth and fifth fingers of her right hand. I had never noticed the injury until, one day in the dressing room at Wimbledon, I asked her why she didn’t try to develop a more orthodox grip.
“You could murder people with it”, I told her.
“I can’t”, she answered.
“Why not? Of course you can?”
She held up her right hand and I wished that I were anywhere but where I was, committing my unintentional faux pas. For the fingers were drawn down at right angles (page 43) to the palm of her hand. I didn’t see , then, how she could make any stroke.
“I ‘m sorry Hilde”, I said, “I didn’t know.”
She smiled at me and I knew that she understood. “It doesn’t matter. I am never bothered with thinking about changing my grip.”

Page 44

--- Hilde’s strokes were made in the same manner that the direction of the ball was concaled until it left her racquet.Neither by footwork, body-position nor the position of the racquet was it possible to tell whether the shot would be crosscourt or down the line. I think that was one of the most disconcerting features about her game.”

page 51

Hilde’s dour expression concealed a sense of humor that frequently broke the monotony of seemingly endless matches with her . Once, after a rally of over fifty exchanges that ended a game, we were trying to recover out wind at the umpires stand. She turned wearily to me and then smiled . “My husband and I have a dinner engagement. Do you think we we’ll get there for coffee?”

page 55

.....

With the beginning of the war year , Hilde swept the courts clean in the Scandinavian championships, but the willingness to battle seemed to have deserted her at Wimbledon. Playing perhaps the most ragged and uninspired match of her career, she was beaten by Alice Marble in the semifinal without winning a game. It is unfortunate that a player who for three years dominated the tennis scene in Europe and came so close to triumph at Wimbledon should have bowed out of the game in ignominious defeat. But her record stands as one of the most consistent ever created by a woman champion. In the pursuit of victory, I have never heard Hilde alibi a defeat although she played with a physical handicap which I doubt few players could have surmounted as she did. Unexpressive though she may have seemed to some of her opponents and probablt the galleries at large, she has the heart for trult great match play. I can pay Hilde Sperling no greater compliment than to write that whenever the draw of any tournament in which we were competing was published, I always closed my eyes and expressed the fervent prayer that we were not in the same half. Then I opened my eyes and looked. Usually, we WERE in the same half.
