1940

January 15-22* Danish Indoor Championships, Copenhagen, Denmark (Indoors)

FI: d. Else StÝckel Hollis ??

DF: Sperling/Else StÝckel Hollis d. ??

MX: Hilde Sperling/Anker Jacobsen d. Inge Schroeder/Kalle Schroeder 6-3 6-2

Despite a usual late March date the January 15-22 dates suggest the Danish Indoors was held earlier than usual this year. The German invasion of Denmark in April of 1940 and the general state of war in Europe put a shroud over Hilde's activity during this period.

King Gustav of Sweden is present at Bastad. The presence of Magda Rurac and the title suggests this event was one of importance.

The war is resolving itself in the Allies favor. Tne German occupation of Denamark is liviing on borrowed time, and the resistance grew bolder. In 1944 a resistance newspaper reports Her husband Sven is a German spy. Later in the year the paper backtracks on the accusation. Nonetheless the Sperlings leave Denmark late in 1944, probably due to the touchy situation and Hilde's origins.
From this time forward they retain Danish citizenship but reside in Sweden.

1948

ends July 25 Swedish International, Bastad, Sweden

FI: d Jadwiga Jedrzjowska 8-6 0-6 6-1

This is the first known event for Hilde in over 3 years.

LKK posted this excerpt, a translation from Jaja's autobiography:

"(...) In July I was invited to participate in the Swedish International Championships in Baastad. When I arrived there, the first person I met was Hilde Krahwinkel-Sperling ! Despite our rivalry lasting so many years, we were pleased to see each other again. We fell into each other's arms.
- Poor Jadwiga, you had to suffer so much during the war ! What a disaster is a war !
I had to tell her about everything with details.
- Oh, how much I was happier than you - sighed Hilde - I didn't experience the disasters of war, I lived a common life, and I could play as much tennis as I wanted.

There was a tough competition in the Baastad tournament. (...) In the final I had to fight versus, I don't know how many times I had played against her in my life, Hilde Krahwinkel-Sperling. (...) The match started. Hilde attacked using long shots, I immediately counter-attacked and after a long duel I won the first set 8-6. But when I was hitting the winning ball, I understood that I was very exhausted. Hilde was 6 war years ahead of me. Then I lost two remaining sets 0-6, 1-6."

That'll save a ton of time Andrew Tas-you're amazing as always

A German source lists her as having won 123 singles events-if true that's gives us a number to aim for.

Her last major was in 1939-after that she limited herself to smaller events in Scandinavia. Her last tournament win was in 1950-she apparently played until 1952.

I've always been intrigued by Hilde-she sounds like an Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario for the 30s, except she never made a fuss on court and was very tall.

Another mystery to me is how her life played out due to her marriage. It could have been ackward indeed being German when the Germans invaded Denmark in 1940-how did she feel or react to all that? Danes don't seem to eager to claim her, and unlike Aussem she never caught the fancy of the German public either.

Interesting to note that (if my results are correct?) between losing to Aussem in the 1931 Wimbledon final and losing to Jacobs in the 1936 Wimbledon final she was undefeated in final matches and had won 27 straight finals going into the 1936 Wimbledon final. compare this to other champions and apart from lenglen who after 1919 never lost a final (excluding walkovers which dont count therefore won 70 finals) only Court had a better record with 31 straight final wins (between 1961 and 1963).

I also have Elizabeth Ryan winning 26 straight finals between 1924 and 1926 but dont have her complete record and am missing 35 tournament wins.
