1999:Light at the end of the tunnel

Kournikova Allows Capriati to Unravel
New York Times; New York; Apr 8, 1999;

Ninth-seeded Anna Kournikova made sure there would be no sweet return to the past for Jennifer Capriati last night.

Kournikova stayed patient and took advantage of a bushel of Capriati's unforced errors to record a 6-3, 6-3 victory in the second round of the Bausch & Lomb Championships at Amelia Island, Fla.

The victory set up a match today between Kournikova and top-seeded Lindsay Davenport, the second-ranked player in the world.

In other action yesterday, fourth-seeded Mary Pierce began defense of her title with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Catalina Cristea. Pierce took just 43 minutes, a dominating performance in which she lost just 18 points and no game went to deuce. She showed little ill effect from the ankle injury that bothered her in a loss to Amanda Coetzer two weeks ago in the Lipton Championships.

Earlier, there were a pair of mild upsets on center court.

No. 16-seeded Iva Majoli fell, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2, to Ines Gorrochategui, and Fabiola Zuluaga defeated 13th-seeded Lisa Raymond, 6-2, 5-7, 6-0. Raymond won just six points in the final set.

Capriati Upsets Hingis in 3 Sets
New York Times Jan 9, 2000;

A resurgent Jennifer Capriati upset top-ranked Martina Hingis, 7-6 (7-3), 4-6, 6-3, yesterday to win the Millennium Cup tournament.

The 23rd-ranked Capriati, on a comeback after tumbling out of the top 100 in 1998, advanced to the final by beating No. 5 Mary Pierce in the semifinals in the exhibition tournament.

''I couldn't feel much better,'' Capriati said after her first victory over Hingis. ''It is great. I hope I can repeat it and beat her in a Grand Slam now.''

In a match filled with 18 service breaks, both players stayed on the baseline.

Capriati had the opportunity to wrap up the first set, leading by 5-2. But she dropped her service game twice as Hingis fought back to 6-6 before Capriati won the tie breaker.

She then lost her next four service games as the 19-year-old Hingis won the second set.

Capriati, 23, began poorly in the deciding set by trailing, 3-1. But she recovered her composure to break Hingis in the sixth and eighth games and then served out the match for the victory.

''All the hard work at home is paying off,'' Capriati said. ''I'm pretty happy with my form now, but I'm going to take it one tournament at a time and not look too far ahead.''

Hingis said the defeat was a good wake-up call.

''It is better to lose here than in Australia,'' Hingis said. Both players left after the tournament for Sydney, Australia, where they will play in an event before the Australian Open next week.

@ the Sydney match!
But I remember that news, when Jenny beat the #1 player in the first Millenium final! That was the turning point.
