USTA names Capriati, Seles for Fed Cup Team

USTA names Capriati, Seles for Fed Cup Team
March 21, 2002

WHITE PLAINS, NEW YORK (TICKER) -- Jennifer Capriati, Monica Seles, Meghann Shaughnessy and Lisa Raymond were named to the United States team that will face Austria in the first round of the Fed Cup at Charlotte, North Carolina on April 27-28, team captain Billie Jean King announced on Thursday.

Capriati, the two-time Australian Open champion and No. 1 player in the Sanex WTA Tour rankings, has represented the U.S. in the Fed Cup in 1990, 1991, 1996 and 2000. The 25-year-old has won three of the last five Grand Slam titles and regained the No. 1 ranking from fellow American Venus Williams this week.

Seles has been on every Fed Cup team since 1996, helping the U.S. to titles that year as well as 1999 and 2000. She has 52 career singles titles, including nine Grand Slams. The 28-year-old won most recently at Doha, Qatar in February.

Raymond is ranked No. 21 in singles and No. 1 in doubles. She won at Memphis this year and already has four doubles titles with partner Rennae Stubbs in 2002. The 28-year-old has 31 career doubles titles and was a Fed Cup member in 1997, 1998 and 2000.

Shaughnessy has two singles and three doubles titles this season and is making her Fed Cup debut. The 22-year-old is ranked No. 13 in singles and No. 24 in doubles.

"I couldn't be more pleased with our Fed Cup team for the start of the 2002 campaign," King said. "Not only do we have the top players in singles and doubles in Jennifer and Lisa, but we have a loyal veteran and formidable Fed Cup player in Monica and a rising star in Meghann. The quest for the 2002 Fed Cup will be a competitive one, but we are starting with a strong team against the Austrians."

The U.S. has won a record 17 Fed Cup championships since the event began in 1963. The Americans withdrew from the event last year following the September 11 terrorist attacks. Sixteen nations are competing this year. The U.S.-Austria winner faces the winner of the Czech Republic-Croatia tie in the second round on July 20-21.

Hmmm.... so Monica plays again

She's gonna play 1 or 2 matches right?

Well she will have two weeks off after the FED Cup, so all should be good

I want Croatia to win agaist Czech republic, but if Czech republic wins, they will play here in Czech rep. against USA maybe, so i would have a chance to see Monica and other girls

Monica never says no to Fed cup, but I suppose that's one of the reasons I'm a fan .

Don't worry, Loyal Selesian, it's just 1 or 2 matches, and they play against Austria which shouldn't be a problem for USA

I am angry, Monica should not play, this bad King is using her, when williams play, they put Monica into substitute, Monica is really TOO TOO KIND

Rafa! Rafa! Rafa!

Ennis and Jack found something most people don't ever find in this life...true love, the deepest, purest, most beautiful thing in the universes. Ennis and Jack have TRUE LOVE. They are SOULMATES. They have a love so deep, so pure, so strong, that it transcends everything, it's eternal.
