It's really is a small world.

Did you know?

That before Jimmy Evert meet and married Collette Evert. He dated Gloria Connors, Jimmy Connors mother?

That's LOL funny GRene. Lets just hope it wasn't TOO serious. If they'd married Jimbo and Chris could have been siblings.

Gloria Evans was good enough to play a lot of the stars back in the 1940s. She may have even had a US ranking. And Chris's dad was really good on clay, which should come as no surpise.

When Alfa and I interviewed Pauline Betz (1946 Wimby) champ she said her eldest son was Chris Evert's first boyfriend.

As I recall, Pauline didn't think that much of Gloria's game. She told me that at tournaments they had the seeded players then they had the A players and that's where Gloria was. Pauline said she really wasn't afraid of anyone outside the top 5.

That sounds right to me Roan. Gloria was pretty good in her area (both she Jimmy were from Illinois I think), but she was never a threat to be top #10 in the US.

i believe it WAS serious between poppa evert and momma connors, actually... jean-michel may remember the whole story. but apparently it was in fact Gloria Connors that convinced either chris or jimmy that they were too young and that their desires for what they both wanted from life was too important to let the relationship get in the way. It may have been a gloria/chris 'just between us girls' chat...

I was reading the book Nike is a Goddess. That's where I found out about Chris' dad and Jimmy mom.

Also in the book. It says that Chris marriage to John was illadvised. Does anyone know why?

Well, we all know what the Royal Family does with attractive, intelligent little blonde princesses who would be Queen- can you blame them?

Oh, I'm feeling so incredibly gauche this Friday afternoon...

they probably are implying that, because it ended in divorce, it was illadvised, but i cant think of a better situation for chris than to have a guy like john devote all his energy to stabilizing her career at the expense of his own...he was certainly the right one for her to be married to while she played tennis, just not the right one for her to find her deeper self with. (note; after divorcing lloyd, she didnt win another grand slam title)

from everything i know both of chris' parents LOVED and STILL love john, so i doubt anyone 'advised' against it at the time, only in retrospect...and seeing that neither party regrets what happened, i wouldnt say that counts as illadvised either.

Really Rollo? In her bio, Chris mentions Pike Rowley as her first "flirt", however if her memories for men is as bad as for her matches.......
