Classic Sports Network

I'm curious what others know about this channel. My original thinking was that it was simply a pre-curser to ESPN Classic and is no longer (unfortunately) operating. However, I just noticed a recent review of the channel on a website rating television channels, so it kind of got me wondering. I know Bud Collins used to work for the show, and they had a whole slew of classic matches that have never been re-broadcasted on ESPN Classic. Thanks in advance!

I was thrilled when Class Sports Network first came out. I loved the classic college football games as well as the tennis. Although I was always disappointed with the few Wimbledon matches that aired. Usually it was nothing more than BBC highlights. But I used to love the "Countdown to the US Open." I enjoyed reliving classic clashes like the 84 womens final between Chris and Martina. Also, I loved the 84 mens semis with Cash, Lendl, Conners, and Mac. What a great year for the US Open!!

But as you pointed out, I don't see very many actual matches on ESPN Classic. It's mostly documentaries now. As good as they are, they're usually the same ones over and over with very little variety.

Hanafan thanks for sharing. I personally knew nothing of Classic Sports Network until another Blaster recently taped a few matches for me. And of the bit I got to see, the channel seemed superior to ESPN Classic in numerous ways. Your right; ESPN Classic seems intent on annually re-broadcasting the typical 1980 Wimby final (Borg vs McEnroe) or the 1978 Wimby final (Navratilova vs Evert). And IMO the latter match isn't even a very good one. On the other hand, at least CSN showed the occasional rarity (Evert vs Eisel) that was nearly impossible to see otherwise - even if the only copy they had lacked a match's final three or four games! But the odd thing is, from the small amount of research I've done, it seems that CSN was/is also owned by ESPN, and if so, likely has the full catelog of CSN matches shown. Perhaps DAZE, TennisVideos or others know more about this??

HanafanGA: I forgot to ask you whether you knew if Classic Sports Network was was on the air prior to and/or after ESPN Classic? Might you know if they were they bought up by ESPN or else always owned by these same people? Perhaps my info is incorrect and there was never a connection btwn the two? Am surprised no one on here seems to know, with all the networks pre-existing library of classic older matches...but who might have them now?? Perhaps this is more of a question for Jon Wertham (Sports Illustrated)?

Santorofan, if I recall correctly, Classic Sports network was started by ESPN maybe around 1995?? And was part of the ESPN family of networks. I suppose some marketing guy for the company decided that ESPN should change the name to "ESPN Class Sports Network" as it gained in popularity. Unless there was another seperate network airing classic sports, this is the only one that I'm aware of.

But if it is the same network, there is a difference in the programming. They are not showing nearly as many tennis matches. In fact, I seem to recall that every Sunday night they had a new tennis match to feature. Those would involve Laver, Nastase, Smith, Connors, Borg, McEnroe, King, Evert, Navratilova, and Goolagong mostly. But they no longer do that.

Back in the early 90's, I wrote to several networks such as ESPN, CBS, and NBC about obtaining copies of matches from them. Only ESPN replied and said that they did not make copies of matches for anyone except those involved in the matches or other media sources.
