Re: my weekly rankings project

1957

my initial list:

- the ranking list you see here is incomplete and includes a sample of ca. 60 promising tournaments
- because Head Knode, Hard, Bloomer were too tight together with that sample, I decided to add some more containing these 3 players (this explained the big points-gap between no.4 and no.5)
- this is primarily a work element to determine the grades of the early 1958 tournaments.
- despite incomplete it shows a clear tendency ...

from the sample of tournaments I picked for this initial list, the most weighty are (exceptionally in date order):

normally I would use recent weekly rankings to assign the values, but for the initial rankings I have no preceding rankings, so these values above can only be provisional,
when I will work on the full 1950s some day I can assign the final values

about making this initial list:

1. after taking over the data I assign all normal tournaments a lump of 500 points (assumingly I picked only big competitions), the "Big 3" get 1,000 points, than a first ranking calculation
2. this ranking after the first calculation I use to assign individual points like I usually do it for every other tournament, yet another calculation, the ranking has changed.
3. to prevent problems with the number of results issue, I took an average of the ranking points of the 2nd ranking - after this again the usual points assigning procedure and calculating
4. this 3rd outcome is still without quality points, now I add these by using this quasi-year-end-ranking for all weeks of 1957 (pretending there is no change throughout the year)

Re: my weekly rankings project

1958

The ranking list below includes the most promising tournaments for ranking purposes (draw size).
Despite incomplete it shows a clear tendency.
It is very unlikely that the top4 positions will change after including all tournament results.

(It seems that I picked all tournaments with Bueno playing in. That wasn't my intention to do - sheer coincidence.)

changings after THE CHAMPIONSHIPS

- Darlene Hard makes an outstanding leap from no 18 into the top 10
- Mortimer loses her top spot to Truman because she coudn't defend her points from last year. For Truman it was enough to reach the same round to become a teenage #1

real tightness in the top region:

Sandra Reynolds new #1

- her steady rise comes to a happy ending.
- she collected a lot of points from mid-grade tournaments this summer, especially quality points - 44% of her total.
- Mortimer and Truman have "only" 34% on their own.

the US Championships:

>>> 1959-09-07

the full season:

this is the first list which is based on most results available at now

- after the revision of database Bueno is not #1 again, Reynolds still remains there for some weeks more
- Reynolds can be called a shooting star climbing from last years #23 to the top within months
- compatriot Schuurman is not far behind from beeing "only" #30 for 1958
- other South Africans also did well over the year: Cross, Gerson, Hammill

Re: my weekly rankings project

1960

___________________

notable changings after Australian Championships:
winner Margaret Smith: #112 up to #28, finalist Jan Lehane: #15 up to #11

March 21: Ann Haydon reaches new high at #3

April 18: Bernice Carr Vukovich jumps up from #94 to #39 after winning the title in Johannesburg

May 2: Bernice Carr Vukovich collects another title and moves up to #30 / Haydon new in runner-up position

May 9: younsters with notable success:
- Carol Caldwell #96 up to #65 after L.A. final
- and Lynne Hutchings up from #227 up to #98 after Hurlingham SF

Ann Haydon is the new #1 just before the French starts, she rises to the top by not playing but losing less points than the other players

after the French Champhionships:

- Betsy Abbas comes from nowhere into the top100 after reaching the QF under lucky circumstances, two injuries of her seeded opponents;
because the matches started I gave her the full round points, but quality points only for Kormocy not for the Hawton match
- first notice of Francoise Durr: the later #1 debuts at #148 after winning 2 matches here

thrilling road to Wimbledon:

June 13: Deidre Catt jumps up from #19 to #11 after her triumph at Bristol where she defeated Reynolds #3, Ramirez #7 and Schuurmann #8,
she earns 518 points with a 52 % quality ratio

June 20: 17yo Karen Hantze jumps from #20 to #13 with her final appearance at Queen's Club

after Wimbledon:

- 14 out of the top20 gained points compared to last year's week, but that doesn't change much in the upper part of the rankings.
- Haydon had a better result than last year and can consolidate her no1 ranking a little bit more above Bueno
- last year's winner Bueno only could defend or lose points what made it more difficult to be a contender for the #1 afterwards
- Hantze still in good form enters the top10
- loser of the week might be Sally Moore by falling down #19 to #29, as last year's SF surprise appearance lost now her first match

Aug 1: Bernice Carr Vukovich reaches the top 10, her performance since April is remarkable: 94-39--30-28--24--21--19-17-15-13--10
she is the 4th South African ranked top 10 since 1957 and the 3rd under the current top 10

Aug 15:
- Moffit's exceptional weeks: after SF at Haverford, victory at Philadelphia, SF in Orange the 16yo moves up 88 positions within 4 weeks: 122-89-51-34
- Richey's final appearance in Orange let her move up form #55 to #32

Aug 22: 16yo Kathy Cabot reaches the QF at Manchester with a win over current #6 Lehane and jumps up #58 to #44

after the US National Championships:

- Hard cannot change her ranking upwards with her 2nd Grand Slam victory this year
- last year's winner Bueno could't defend her points, but contenders Haydon and Truman also couldn't, so she can still reign at the top
- notable up-movers are Donna Floyd and Barbara Browning

Sept 26: Haydon's victory in L.A. let her take over the the #1 spot again with wins over than reighning #1 Bueno and #5 Hard (51 % quality points)

Oct 10:
- Bueno back on top slightly, after Haydon lost points form last year's Mexico success
- Paule Courteix jumps from #102 to #68 after her victory at the French closed Ch. with defeats over #20 Courtie and #54 Billaz (66 % quality)

Nov 21: after winning Brisbane and reaching the final of Sydney "NSW" Margaret Court is top20 for the first time

Dec 12: Kathy Chabot rises up from #39 to #32, she had won the title of La Jolla with defeats over #36 Caldwell and #8 Hantze (60% quality)

full season:

- this time Bueno is only the no2
- Bueno and Haydon, tight together since May, both gained points until November and also replaced each other several times,
but in the end it is Haydon who prevailed in collecting points.
- both set new records in total points within a 52 week period

there are big ups and downs within this season:
- impressive moves up make 3 South Africans: Bernice Vukovich, Lynn Hutchings and Margaret Hunt
- on the other side former high ranked players falling free like Rosie Reyes, Sally Moore, Mary Carter

- only 1 with more than half of the top50 listed (same last year)
- in comparison: in 1979 there are 17 tournaments with not less than 26 players ranked top50 listed (16 times in 1980)

Re: my weekly rankings project

1961

____________________

Jan 30: Aus. Nationals
- Lehane and Smith repeat last year's final at the Aus. Nationals but both go down the rankings
because the tournament value this year is much lower what means less ranking points
- 16yo Robin Ebbern jumps from #103 to #57 after her SF there

Feb 27:
Sally Moore's surprise victory in Jamaica let her jump up from #122 to #39 !!!
with defeats over Kormoczy #14, Yola Ramirez #7 and Haydon #1 brings her 278 quality points alone,
(the Truman retirement doesn't count for quality)

March 13: Bueno comes close to the reighning #1, is only 27 points behind after her success in Barranquilla

in March:
Helga Schultze started her successful campaign on the Mediterranean circuit ranked at the buttom at #1400
after 3 weeks she is already top100 (440-165-82); she will reach the top40 before the French

April 10:
- Carol Prosen jumps from #102 up to #64 after reaching the SF in St.Petersburg over #7 Ramirez

April 24: Rita Bentley is a new top10 player, she joins the 4 other Britains above her - what a domination that was, unthinkable today !!!

May 1:
- Bueno replaces Haydon at #1 again
- Edda Buding jumps into the top10 from #14, after reaching the SF in Bournemouth passing #1 Haydon enroute (60 % quality points)

May 8:
- unknown Karin Herich reaches the QF in Hurlingham with a defeat over top10 player Bentley and jumps from #189 to #84
- Liz Starkie is #20 now, it is step on her steady rise up the rankings from February on (105-94--73-56-45-39--28--25--23-20)

May 15: after Italian Ch's:
- player of the week is doubtless Lesley Turner with reaching the final against Bueno, defeating 3 top10 players enroute.
she earns more quality points than round points (52%) and even more total points than the winner Bueno - the prize is a jump from #26 to #15
- Margaret Smith reaches the top 10 with reaching the SF, a result based also on her success at the Mediterranean circuit since March
- 17yo Carol Rosser, the Guildford finalist, goes up 36 positions to #60 - last week she reached the top100 for the first time with her 3R-success at Hurlingham

after French Ch's:

- Haydon's Grand Slam triumph brings no change at the top, it reduces the gap again to Bueno to only 100 points
- surprise quarterfinalist Pilar Barril up from #132 to #50

June 12: Turner rises up short below the top10 (15-13-11)

June 19: Smith's victory in Beckenham brings her extraordinarily 700 points, 50% of them are quality points
(defeats #16 Bentley, #12 Hantze, #1 Haydon, #7 Truman)

June 26: on the eve of Wimbledon:
- the second big victory in a row for Smith at one of the biggest tournmants let her move up to #5 before Wimbledon
- Nancy Richey jumps from #27 to #15 after her final appearance losing against Smith,
she almost got the same quality points like Smith (defeats: #69 MacLennan, #42 Bricka, #36 Floyd, #11 Turner, #8 Truman)

Wimbledon:

- without Bueno playing, Mortimer easily rises to #2 (without a chance for the #1)
- it's the second time after June 1959 that the #1 and #2 are Brits
- surprisingly there are no further movements inside the top10
- notable new heights for Margaret Hunt, Sue Butt, Honor Durose, Doris Schuster, Eva Duldig, Eleanor Dodge

>>> June 26

Yola Ramirez knocks off Mortimer from the #2 position, a position Ramirez held already for a lone week back in Sept '59

after the US Championships:

- winner Hard goes up 2 positions, only because Bueno and Reynolds did not defend points
- Judy Alvarez #116 to #69

Oct 16: Bueno slides out of top10

a tight 4th quarter at the top:

Smith comes out on top at the last possible moment! - by claiming all the titles at the last 4 tournaments of the season
