Rollo's Rankings

Stat geek that I am a few years ago I came up with my own ranking system.
While it is near perfection in my eyes (just kidding, sort of!) I realize it may not be everyone's cup of tea.

So just for fun, I'll start laying out my "rankings" at least one year a month.

Along the way I'll add statistics that we can add to our yearly threads.

Re: Rollo's Rankings

Rollo's ranking system in a nutshell

My rankings reflect the importance of grand slams. They also heavily reward winning events, as opposed to losing in earlier rounds.

My ranking takes a player's top 10 results over a calendar year.

2019 Points per event

6000 points for grand slams
3000 points for the YEC (WTA Finals)
1800 points for Mandatory 4 events (Miami, I. Wells, Madrid, and Beijing)
1200 points for Premier 5 events (Doha, Rome, Cincy, Canada, and Wuhan)
1000 points for Premier big money events (Dubai only example)

0900 points for Premier events such as Brisbane or Sydney; Zhuhai, and Fed Cup are also in this category.
0600 points for an International big money events (Shenzen, Moscow and Tianjin the only examples)
0400 points for International events such as Nottingham
0300 points for WTA 125 series events
0200 points for 100K and 80K ITFs
0100 for all lower level ITF events

Points percentage by round

100 % for winning an event
045 % for finalists
030 % for semifinalists
015 % for quarterfinalists
half that number for every following round.
1st Round losers get 1 point.
Qualifiers get half points for 1R loses because they won to get there.

Grand Slam points as an example

6000 points--Winner
2700 points--Finalist
1800 points--Semifinalist
0900 points--Quarterfinalist
0450 points-Round of 16
0225 points-Round of 32
0112 points-Round of 64
0056 points-Round of 128 who came through qualifying
0001 point--Round of 128 losers

20. Elena Vesnina (Russia)-------------------3104 points

Analysis and Summary:

The slams are divided 4 ways and no one dominates the tour week to week.

Wihout a dominant female the top ranking is up for grabs almost to the end. Muguruza led the rankings coming into the YEC in Singapore, but only by a sliver, as 4 other women had a chance to finish #1 with the title: Venus Williams, Ostapenko, Pliskova, or Halep. Every woman fell early before the semifinals except for Venus, who lost to Wozniacki for the first time ever in 9 meetings on a slow indoor court. Thus Muguruza becomes #1 by virtual default.

Notable retirements:

Daniela Hantuchova, Kimiko Date.

19. Kiki Bertens (Netherlands)---------3309 points
20. Elena Vesnina (Russia)------------3261 points

-----------------------------------------------------

Top Ten Sketches

01. Angelique Kerber

Won 3 of 22 events. (Won Australian Open, Stuttgart, and the US Open)
Match record 63-16, 2 defaults (.777%)
13-7 vs top 10: (1-1 vs S. Williams, 0-1 Radwanska, 1-1 vs Cibulkova, 4-1 vs Halep, 1-1 vs Pliskova, 3-0 vs Keys, 1-2 vs Azarenka, 2-0 vs Konta

Clearly the player of the year with 2 slams and RU at Wimbledon and the Rio Olympics. Her key matches came early at the Australian Open. Angelique almost lost in the opening round. She survived a match point vs Misaki Doi, went on to reach the final, and in what was arguably the match of the year topped Serena Williams 6-4 3-6 6-4. Kerber bombed out in the 1R in Paris, but rebounded to make the finals at Wimbledon, where she pushed Serena Williams. Angie missed the gold medal at the Rio Olympics, having to settle for a silver medal.

The US was clearly going to settle who was #1. Kerber was on a collision course to meet Serena in the final. Karolina Pliskova threw a spammer into matters by shocking Serena in the semis. The hard hitting Czech almost upended Kerber as well. Angelique won 6-3 4-6 6-4, securing her #1 ranking.

Kerber is the first German #1 since Steffi Graf.

02. Serena Williams

Won 2 of 08 events. (Won Wimbledon and Rome)
Match record 38-6 (.863%)
5-4 vs Top 10: 1-1 vs Kerber, 2-0 vs Radwanska, 0-1 vs Muguruza, 2-0 vs Halep, 0-1 vs Pliskova, 0-1 vs Azarenka)

While Serena was the most consistent player in the grand slams, by her exalted standards 1 major a year falls short. No other woman reached the semis of all 4 majors. Williams fell to Kerber in the Aussie final as the German held her nerve in a tense 3rd set. At the French she was once again outhit off the ground by Muguruza. The grass of Wimbledon suits Rena's serve, keeping her in the hunt for year end #1.

The expected showdown vs Kerber at tne US open never materialized, as in the semis Serena was blasted off the court by an in-form Karolina Pliskova.

As is often the case in recent years Serena did not play after the US Open.

03. Agneiszka Radwanska

Won 3 of 21 events.
Match record 53-18, 1 default (.746%)

6-6 vs top 10: (0-2 vs S. Williams, 1-0 vs Muguruza, 1-3 vs Cibulkova, 0-1 vs Halep, 2-0 vs Pliskova, 2-0 vs Konta

Aga's overall consistency trumps Garbine's French Open title.

04. Garbine Muguruza

Won 1 of 20 events.
Match record 36-20, 2 retirements. (.642%)
2-5 vs the top 10: (1-0 vs S. Williams, 0-1 vs Radwanska, 1-0 vs Cibulkova, 0-2 vs Pliskova, 0-1 vs Azarenka, 0-1 vs Keys)

While she won only 1 event, it was a biggie. Garbine won Roland Garros is style but failed to follow it up with a 2nd title.

-------------------------------------

Notable retirements:

Ana Ivanovic, Nicole Vaidisova, Shahar Peer.

Notable absences:

Maria Sharapova, banned from the tour early in the year after testing positive for meldonium.
