Re: Wimbledon 1980
Ah what sweetness this is...the sound of the ball off of wood racquets, acrobatic volleying (as opposed to every volley being a swing volley), and the joy of seeing a young and carefree Andrea Jaeger.
I almost choked on hearing "Miss Wade was playing Wimbledon before Jaeger was born..." but of course it was true. I recall wanting Wade to win SO bad-but she was long over the hill at this stage. Her #7 seeding here was her last top 8 seeding in a slam.
As for Rapunzel-AKA Andrea Jaeger. I love how Andrea let all her emotions run wild-the hands on her hips, twirling the racquet in her hands like a gunfighter. She was a feisty little thing, and beyond her years in tactics and the ability to volley. This was all in contrast to the the more tightly held together Chris Evert and Tracy Austin.
How well spoken Jags was at 15. Much better than Jennifer Capriati for example.
