Question about Career Highs of old players

Hello. Is there any way to get Career High rankings of old players (from the 70's or 80's for example) ? Especially doubles.

And don't say Wikipedia please. Thank you !

Now the WTA website is sh*t but it didn't help much in the past either.

Thanks for putting up a thread Nightcrawl3r

Best bets will be WTA Media Guides, tournament programs, and perhaps some World of Tennis yearbooks.

Doubles will be notoriously tough as doubles computer rankings didn't start til about 1984.

I'll see what I can find tonight for Rumanians.

In the meantime what players do you want the most?

I remember Virginia Ruzici....

Re: Question about Career Highs of old players

Ok-not sure what I will find but here goes.

1997 Corel WTA Media Guide (highest ranks as of end of 1996-sadly no doubles!)

Catalina Cristea (p. 265) --Career high singles #93 on 31 July 1995

Ruxandra Dragomir
(p. 81-2)--Career high singles #25 on 26 Novemver 1996

Irina Spirlea (p 230)--Career high #11 on 18 November 1996--#28 in doubles 25 November 1996

Will try another year's media guide tomorrow.

Thank you !

Are these old media guides available for public ? Or did you buy them, as a tennis history fan ? Does someone have something from 1984, 1985 or 1998, 1999, 2000 ?

P.S : I sent you another PM !

Not sure if he still has a stall there now - but he always used to have a spot at the Eastbourne event selling WTA/ATP media guides.

Re: Question about Career Highs of old players

Or maybe @Jem has something on Ruzici or Romanov's doubles ranks from the 80's .

He / she also says that Florenta Mihai was #23 in singles, but an exact date isn't specified. For sure in '77 or '78 though .

The May 1978 issue of World Tennis magazine shows Mihai at No. 23 in the WTA rankings. It does not have a date for the rankings, but the accompanying ATP rankings are for the last week in February.
