Are we talking about 1989 Lipton, not '87? And please do tell the story of that ride to the airport....

The best years on the WTA tour were :

1999
1990
1981
100% agree. Not only were there multiple slams winners, but each winner was in contention for the whole year.

Lately some of these years with 4 different slam winners are a mess due to injuries or severe loss of form.

1989 Lipton. Gaby won 6-1, 4-6, 6-2. Also forgot to mention Chrissie vs. Hurricane Helen in the quarterfinal.

I think the 1984 bus ride story is in the 1984 thread. Apparently, the women's Italian Open was played in Purgatorio or someplace that was some distance from the nearest airport. So Manuela Maleeva & "Ice Queen" Evert shared a ride to the escape route after the final. The fact that Chrissie lost on clay should give you some idea of her general post-match attitude.
