I realise that perhaps this is asking for too much

Is there any way we could an indicator (a pop up like we get for pm's) that we are going to be logged out if we don't submit our pm (or post) soon? I'm certain it's happened to others where you're writing a rather lengthy pm (or post) and you go to submit and the prompt appears to log in.
You log in again but have lost your pm and have to rewrite it again.

Are there any solutions (besides copying my response before I submit)?

No. Private messaging is not designed as a tool to write lengthy letters and messages to your friends. Incredibly, that's what email is designed for.

What settings do you have in the USER CP? I've never been logged out and thus never presented with the problem you've described.

The only workaround is the solution you suggested, and I use, which is to copy the text before pressing the submit button.

I was logged out once while writing a lengthy post so now I copy all my longer posts before I submit them... it'll be a bit annoying in the beginning but once you make a habit of it , it won't be so bad

Thank you Amanda. I'll check my user cp. Sorry to have wasted your time.

Just set it to never log you out and you won't have a problem ?
