Becoming A Premium Member

Been searching on this page and have no clue where to go to become a Premium Member.

Is it worth it? What are the perks, etc?

If you're using the "CSS" skin, there should be sign-up links on the right-hand side of the page.

YOu get bigger avatars, pics in your sig, and a few other goodies.

Reason is poor propaganda when opposed by the yammering, unceasing lies of shrewd and evil and self-serving men.

Re: Becoming A Premium Member

I just want to get clear on this... is this a business that is selling a service for revenue (better benefits for a fee), or some kind of operation that needs donations (support the people that make this site possible because they work hard at it for little return)?

It may or may not influence my decision, but I just want to understand.

Thanks.

I don't think so..... !

I will stand to be corrected, but I believe you are doing volunteer service for somebody's business. I'm sort of surprised that is not clear........

From what I understand, that would make a difference to you........? It would for me too in terms of donating my time.

Maybe or maybe not for buying a Premium Membership; since that is like buying a service.

Well, maybe I'm wrong; let's get to the bottom of this.

Who is Verticalscope, Inc?

Well Verticalscope is the compagny that runs the board, and of course they make money. However I doubt that the total amount of paying memberships on the board (with 53k+ members in total) cover all the needs of the board.

After that it's up to you as why you join or not. Most people join for bigger avies, siggy pictures and all that to be honest and don't really care about the rest.

Oh I know... they earn the rest - plus profit - from advertising.

Yes, as I've said from the first post, it may or may not influence my decision. But I wanted to get to the bottom of it... there has been I believe, at least some time ago, the notion that this is sort of a "contribution" to "help out", which is something I would actually consider doing (and have done on other boards) if that were the case. (But it is not the case here.)

As for working for free for this company...... that is another topic. Not my business, directly, since I don't do it, but...... would be interesting to see discussed.

I wouldn't call it work myself but maybe others have a different view on it

Re: Becoming A Premium Member

I do think we are at a point where they're selling a service as part of how they generate revenue for this site - but I think Steve should really be the one to answer that.

Message boards seem to be only a PART of what VerticalScope does (you can visit their website if you want http://www.verticalscope.com/)

I have assumed for a while now that someone's making some money off of this site - not alot, no one's getting rich or making a living from wtaworld, but some - and that my volunteer efforts are aiding that process.

But I don't really look at it that way - I guess I think of the time I spend more in terms of how it helps the board/community, rather than how it helps the site owners. I work with them because they provide us with this nice playpen.

If the task got too onerous, or I felt they were making enough to pay us feasible, I might feel differently.

Overall I agree. The only quibble is to clarify thatVerticalscope does have employees who are paid a salary (make a living) plus owners who probably work for the company and in addition make profits from the business - revenues - expenses.

What WE do here - not just the volunteer mods - but all of us (look at the members as unpaid content generators) allow the company to sell ads to this board and their others.

I don't have any issue with any of that, but it is good to see it spelled out. I Think there is a lingering concept that this board is some kind of volunteer effort out of the goodness of the hearts of some tennis fans. And that paying for a Premium Membership is "supporting" that effort.

We also need to recognize that this board could disappear tomorrow, permanently. We dont have ownership nor control of its future. Thus any "work" we put into it - content generation, for most of us - should be for the value of doing it at the time we do it, as assuming future value is risky.

As I said, I just like to see these things spelled out. I think assumptions are made, which are more false than true. No complaints; just clarity.

Re: Becoming A Premium Member

If you pay for Premium Membership, you are paying for the service.

The lingering concept of 'supporting the site' comes from a time some years ago when the site crashed and the owners initially considered not re-opening it. When they eventually did, they offered the option for users to donate to its upkeep. You may still see some of those original donors around with the 'site supporters' graphic above their username. Any priviliges they received - eg. custom user titles - were at the benevolence of the webmaster: the donations were purely voluntary with no conditions attached.

That was a quite different situation to the current Premium Membership option that offers a clear package.
