No there isn't. It was a decision by the technical staff who think that browsing in large threads slows things down. But thread opener will remain the same, with all the privileges to edit the title and all that. No post will be deleted either.

And threads aren't really closed in the sense that noone will be able to post in them. They're just closed and reopened.

It's a load of crap, that's what it is.
And if you go from 73000 to 1 post, it's not re-opened, it's fucked.

Wanna bet that in the future 'premium members' are allowed to have threads with over 5000 posts.

They'd have a damned hard time enforcing something like that - because the closing/opening/etc. has to be done by hand.

Look, I'm not crazy about the idea, either. It's more work for me, and I'm a fairly lazy person at heart. But the Board continues to have serious problems with slow-downs and other errors, and the IT folks are telling us it's related to the strain on the servers. They've tried turning off a bunch of other small featers and other tweaks, but it hasn't helped.

Breaking jumbo threads into chapters should have a more noticeable impact on board performance

Well it sucks, i agree!
but if it helps the board performance it's not such a bad idea. Cause i've had enough off all of those database errors and the slowness

Give it until April 1. That'll give people time to stop accessing the big threads and move into the new sections. If it doesn't help the board-bog, you can have all my vcash/credits, and I will put "mandy7 was right" in my sig.

Just out of interest - there would then be so many threads made, more than normal, wouldn't that still make it slow?
And how come this isn't applying to MTF?

My understanding is that a large number of threads is less of a strain on the system than a few really huge threads - apparently it's a known problem with this software that it doesn't cope well with large threads (or rather, having too many people trying to access large threads at the same time).

I can't really speak to the situation on MTF, but my guess would be that the sheer size of this forum and the activity on those threads (our chat section is over twice the size) makes the difference.

I'll ask the Webheads if they can give you a better answer.

Re: So i there anything we can do about this 'over 5000 posts, so we're closing it'-b

more detail from the peeps behind the curtain:

Quote:
The problem has been documented on vBulletin.com. Here's one example:
http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showt...t=long+threads

And there, they're talking about the problems a single really long thread can do. We've got many threads that are 10 times longer than the ones they're talking about, so the problem is magnified. We hadn't done this yet on MTF because they, as a smaller and relatively newer site, don't have as many threads that long yet. ... If we didn't encounter problems with them (big threads) here, they would still be open, but we did.

Every time someone loads one of those threads, the server counts up the number of posts to calculate how many pages to divide it into for display. We sometimes had dozens of people doing this to the same or other very large threads at the same time throughout the day. This all adds up, and that doesn't even consider the server load taken up by the rest of the site. This is why people started having that problem about navigating to the very last page of those threads. Sometimes it'd take people over a minute to load those pages, and that performance was affecting people visiting other parts of the site.

I will take you up on that bet!

Why would they not be reopened?

Nobody likes change. I dont blame some of you for being suspicious.

No it is not an effort to get more premium members. Here is the deal.

Threads are very slow to open. And generally speaking VB3 handles large threads badly. Not only are the threads slow to open for the general poster, it puts a strain on the resources in the server.

And something else to consider, several posters hitting the these threads all at once could cause error problems.

We are trying to find ways to speed up the site. Closing large threads, then reopen them in another brand new thread will help. Also not letting the thread get to 5000 posts will help as well.

But also, if you want to refer back to previous posts, it will still take longer and be really hard to find things. Oh well.

Well, to some extent. But on the whole, we'd rather slow up the odd research project than have the ongoing conversation, not to mention the whole board, harder to access.

The only problem I have is that it could possibly kill a chat thread.
