The Czechoslovaks win the Cup for the second time. All hopes for a German victory go up in smoke when Bunge feels "a needlelike pain in my left leg. To beat Hana I had to be very quick, so there was no point in going on." The injury first happened 6 weeks before, and got steadily worse with every match at Zurich.

Neither Chris nor Martina participated for the US. While Andrea Jaeger is ranked #3-the second for the US was Candy Reynolds, more noted for doubles than singles. "It's been a very difficult week for me, with a lot of tension and a big responsibility. But I feel I've given everything, and I don't think I had any more", said Reynolds. Candy won her first two singles, but lost in the quarters and semis, putting the pressure squarely on Jaeger. The quarterfinal was a severe test Candy, who lost in 3 grueling hours over 45 games.

The Jaeger-Mandlikova encounter was the match of the week. Andrea led 5-3 in the opening set. She led again in the tiebreak, but couldn't close it even with 2 set points. Shooting ahead 5-1 in the second, Jaeger lost 4 consecutive games. Momentum switched again-with a simple backhand error by Hana tying things up. Mandlikova attacked her way to victory in the final set for the huge upset. "We are disappointed, but I have never seen Hana play so well:, said Nancy Jeffert, the United States captain.

The locals were pleased that the Swiss made it to the semifinals. Petra Delhees was scheduled to be married on Saturday, the day of the semifinals. Petra invited 100 of her wedding guests to see her play before tying the knot.
