My Days at the OZ Open

HI All,
I have just come back from the OZ Open, having gone to days 1-7 & 10 and had a great time.
Here are some snippits of what I saw.

I'll go for Days 1 & 2 first

The End of Pastikova def Kremer
Whilst Pastikova was attacking and looked strong, unfortunately Anne just asn't the player she was, frequently making silly unforced errors of her own.
Both players in Lotto-Patikova in the new blue number- kremer in the white version (looks good) with shorts. Better than the mid week ladies nana skirts that go to the ankle.

Vaidisova def Vento
Saw most of this match. Sat next to vento's coach & husband. He was telling supporters that Maria had a virus that forced her to pull out of Syndey- her temperature was about 100 and she still wasn't 100% right Sanchez Lorenzo also there, supporting Maria V. The match was all about Vaidisova and if she would make winners or errors. The errors got less as the match wore on. i was really excited to see Vaidisova having watched her in New York at the Us Open last year and on tv in Hong Kong but I was a bit disappiointed in her attitude. She carried on like a spoilt brat- like a real child (I know she is young but I mean she carried on like an upset toddler) IOtehr thn that she had a really good game to watch

Afew games of TAX def Weingartner
A good game to watch for its contracts- Weiggatner hitting everythi8ng so hard whuilst Tax using finesse. A bit of fun.

While waiting for another match I watched a bit of Panova vs Serrra Zannetti
Serra Zanetti is obvioulsy around 100 for a reason but she looks frail on the court and lacks power. As I said , she must do soemthing right though

Smashanova def Sanchez.
Watched by Vento and husband, Conchi Martinz-Granados, Llagostera and her mum-all rooting for Maria
Maria had control of the match and really did well with an exciting agreesive all court play. Like so many others, ran out of steam against teh brick wall. Smashanova was supported by a large number of the Jewish community, who at times were a little unfair. MAria let them know it too by staring at them and even complained to the umpire.

Tanasurgarn def Stryova
A real disapointment.
Really enjoyeed watching Barbara last year in Australia- she had a great game and some spunk. Saw her at the US Open against Medina where her cute and bubbly play was overshadowed by her grumpy and moody ways. Unfortunately she has got worse and she carries on somewhat like Vaidisova. A real shame- I hope she can harness her talent- and temperament

Myskina def Peschke.
Both hard hitters-Although at times Kveta matched it with Myskina she was just a little erratic- great to see her back though

Obziler def Loit
Poor Emelie-what a horrible start of the year in Australia with 3 straight losses. She seemd aout of sorts-she made some spectacular shots but was outsteaded by anotehr brick wall.

Dechy def Gagliardi
An evenly matched game- Natalie won the big points and could a little harder when needed

Watched a few games of Rousseau and Perebynis (start of match)
I had never seen Capucine before- very masculine looking player- plays a bit like Julie Halard/Catherine Tanvier (obviously not quite as strong)- she was in complete control and TP looked like being again crushed at the OZ Open (last year Schaul beat her 60 60) Credit to her for her doggedness.

Schiavone def Marrero
Poor Marta again came up against an in form player in the 1st round of the OZ Open (last year she played against a hot Loit) as she was continually out rallied. Schiavone was at her tenacious best.

Spears def Shaughnessy
Saw the end of this match -was amazed at the score when I arrived and soon saw why- Abi was going for it and making the lines and didn't even give MS a chance to attack b'c she was too busy retrieving

Kuznetsova def Kirkland
Kuznetsova way too strong

Groenfeld def Beltrame
Again, ame as Kuzzy, Groenfeld too strong. Beltrame has a really stylish game.

Baltacha def Strebotnik
Elena was spirited and fiesty. Like so many other times when I have seen her play, Katerina seemed sumbissive and lacked confidence (hard to understand, she just won Auckland) Heaps of Poms supporting EB.

Cohen Aloro def Piercce -last few games
Man, Mary could not put a ball in play

Lee Waters def Gubasci
Like me Petra Mandula walked betwen this game and the Kapros/Kirilenko match
I really like both players. Zsofia played the best I have seen in ages I hope she really has turned her career around agian (she did well in some challengers in Israel last year) and is headed for the Top 100. Lee -Waters looked so fit- she has obvioulsy worked on it- especially when I think of her change in body since the Raymond match 2 years ago or even against Ferguson 1 year ago. Given her improvement in speed and stregth (and the considering how well she pl;ayed against Sharapova) I think she can definetly make it back to the Top 50- great greta strory if she does.Again, given that, if Zsofia keeps up this form she should move up as well.

Mandula def Pennetta
Petra had lost a heap of weight- like heaps. alsmost too skinny. One of the best 1st round matches. Both ladies hitting he ball so hard. I really liked them both and are fun too watch. Considering Petra had been injured and played so badly at the end of the year, it was great to see her back at her best. I was also fortunate enough to see FP and PM play at the French Open 2 years ago- similar match apart form now ranked in different positions.

Kirilenko def Kapros
Unlike Lee Waters and Mandula and unlike last year, Anniko has stackedit on. A real shame. Her groundies are super but her movement and her serve have gone backwards. she is a lovely girl though and was kind to Kirilenko after she lost. Maria is a bit like her namesake in Sharapova in being a bit of a poser.

Jidkova def Rauno Pascal
Like to score suggests, very close match. Poor Vivi came so close, you could tell Jidkova was a bit more match fit. In subsuqent days I saw ViVi training for about 2 hours (at least) on the outside courts.

Ferguson def Llagostera
Saw the last few games- sat next to Tony Roache, who was very cool- didn't get to excited. She was pretty gutsy- nice game- Ferguson needs to improve her fitness though-as was evidenced in her Petrova match

Frazier def Irvin
Two of my fav's. No Mirv's mum though which was a huge disappointment.
Terryn Ashely, and Spears and Laura Granville watched - they weren't overly encouring either way but were sitting in Amy Camp. Amy was solid- Mirv missed her opportunities and like Kapros, seems to have lost some condidtining

Better do some work now but will try and write more later on

Where abouts did you sit?

Did you hear a member of Tati's entourage shouting some pretty annoying stuff? And some disrespectful stuff towards Capucine.

Well, i was at Tatis' game against Capuchine and found myself pretty close to Tatis' close, he was giving her plenty of encouragement. Didn't hear any of Tatis' entourage shouting anything untoward as a few of them were sat next to coach. Mind you, the Aussie doubles player was making a twat of himself as he didn't stop moaning about the Womens' game as he stood behind me watching, Ashley Fisher was the nobodys name i think
