STAR SPORTS ASIA presents AO 2005 (Good coverage/ or Rubbish coverage..?)

It's that time of year- when we yell at our tv sets viewing
STAR SPORTS (aka: VJ Amitraj can't stop talking about himself)
coverage of a tennis grand slam. This year they start early
and try to drive us crazy with their version of the Aussie Open 05.

First topic of debate..

Will they show us Maria-vs- Sesil(Which looks to be the
most interesting women's day match on Monday)
from VODAFONE ARENA last match of the day or screw us
over with Zie Jheng-vs- Dinara Safina(Which sounds good; but
come on we're talking about a Sesil match here!)
or will we miss both these matches because Paradorn
has the 3rd match of the day on some other court. Which no
doubt will take 5 hours to finish!!!!

This is on ESPN/STAR ASIA....not ESPN USA.

We're getting coverage from 8am(HK, Singapore) to 8pm daily
live.

lets see.....

vijay will waste ALOT of time talking about himself, or how great tim henman is
we will watch the ai/sucha match 1st thing the coverage starts. so no serena

whenever, whereever paradorn is playing, we WILL get it. and they will start on going about how paradorn can win the title

and now with the chinese revolution, we will get a lot of the gals' matches. not that i mind it, but please be selective and not let us miss out on the actual top players

please, let me have louise plemming! thats the only good thing coming out from starsports stealing my coverage

hey greeny glad u stared this thread. i was thinking of starting it but u beat me into it

i have to say i was very suprised when i first found out. as far as i know, this is the first time they're showing the AO. maybe because its celebrating its 100 years anyways, good or bad coverage i'll take it, the AO coverage from the local network in here sucks although the commentators are not that bad (fred and co.), the fact that they only showed the fourth round onwards was incredibly stupid.

well there's a lot of japanese and chinese girls in the first round, so i'm not expecting much from the coverage on the women's matches. i do hope though that they show matches wherein there is at least one high-ranking player (e.g. dinara against zheng). i know they're both non-asian but it's worth the intrigue, maria vs sesil or maybe not cause paradorn is probably (still) playing around the time their match is scheduled. he seems to have this knack of stretching his 1st round matches into 5-setters. exciting.

hmm for the men, its probably roger, lleyton and who else paradorn. again. i wonder if they'll show xavier vs haas. its on the night match. will they show the night matches btw??

Hi 5's all around. Yes, I can actually watch this slam as a neutral
and may even enjoy it. I was too depressed over H2 being sick last
year, and didn't view much US OPEN; but since she's only injured and
will be back shortly on tour in Feb/Mar....

I'm cheering for the 1st time winner contenders like Amelie, ED , Patty
or even Alicia. I'm also looking forward to seeing Coria, JCF and Tommy
play again too. I hope Gisela does well too, and yes curious to see
what the Chinese players can do after having super early warm ups.

I am so glad I moved from Singapore to Sydney last year. I've had enough of VJ Amritraj and his biases. TV coverage of tennis is so much better here.

thanks gurl tennis!! the night matches are the ones i have a slight chance of seeing live after i got home from school

greenout - i'm with you on rooting for a first time winner, even though i want myskina to win most of all, i think its about time players like ED or on a long shot Alicia get the chance to lift that prestigious trophy. it's really too bad JHH can't defend her title but i'd rather see her play at her best than lose in the early rounds (a la French Open 04). btw i can't believe gisela lost that hobart title especially with that score i've liked her a lot more after watching the hopman cup. she's so cool on the mixed doubles

coria's lucky if he could get past the first round against federer's slayer in the olympics but i'm still hoping he wears him out and squeezed a win

Yeah..go Gisela.

It's really nice to discover or like a player you never had
an interest in before. Weird isn't it? All it took for all of
us was a week of Hopman Cup, and we like Gisela.

I guess it just shows you how media/coverage can neglect
alot of nice, watchable or charming players for the big
contenders or the usual top stars.

Great news everybody- the STAR ASIA coverage seems to be FOXTEL.

The commentary right now from Rod Laver is Liz Smiley and this other
Aussie guy.

So far it's looking really good for us w/out VJ. The show started with
that baldy guy what's his name talking from the studio - and
switched over straight to center court like do with the football matches.

Hurrah! No VJ!

**Pity that the match is an absolute bore.
