Qualy Day 1 report

I'm tired, sick from the heat today and otherwise completely stuffed, so this'll be short.

Karatancheva def Scheepers

I only saw it from when Sesil was up 4-2 in the 2nd. Chani made a comeback, and she played really well to even the score, but Sesil was too good in the TB. Sesil has a big serve that was a weapon for her, I heard it was not too good but today i saw differently. Chani looks a lot different to when i saw her a couple of years ago, she looks smaller and has a diff hair colour, in any case shes looking great. Sesil's dad was there, he was not like you'd expect a tennis dad to be, very quiet and well behaved and barely said anything.

Uberoi def Skavronskaia

The Russian was a huge girl with powerful shots but made more errors and Shikha was very impressive, and bounced around a lot.

Jackson def Hrozenska

I saw the 2nd set of this, Jackson was really impressive. She hits powerfully off both sides and blasted lots of winners past her opponent, including a great FH on match point.

Kirkland def Breadmore

Lauren fought well as always, but Kirkland had more weapons and power, and was consistently moving the ball around, although it took more shots than normal to put Lauren away she kept on with the job. Lauren was up 5-2 in the TB but lost the next 5 pts.

Chuang def Vierin

Chuang was the more aggressive player here who was dominating most of the play, but neither of these players were particularly impressive. The match was long and hard fought, 4hrs in the peak heat of the day. I had to leave before it was over, but someone told me that towards the end both girls could hardly walk, and on match point for Chuang both had an injury time out. I assume Vierin called it and Chuang also took the oppotunity, and both had a massage. When they came out again they had a long rally which Chuang won, and after the point both players leaned onto their racquets for minutes without making any attempt to walk to the net Both looked like they needed medical attention for the heat and Chuang will be stuffed for tomorrow.

Lina K def Fujiwara

I didnt see much of this but Lina looked to be playing and serving very well. Rika is very short and didnt have much to combat Lina with.

Liu def Janes

Nan Nan was very impressive, was dominating with her groundies, forcing Janes to slice all the time. She was quite fired up, looking disappointed at every point she lost, and pumping herself up, albeit very quietly. Janes didnt seem to have any weapons, she was just slicing most balls, and when she cmae to the net wasnt effective.

Hewitt def Nociarova

Apparently Nociarova was injured, but today she looked like a pretty crappy player. Jaslyn was superior but it was only close bc of her choking. Nociarova has no power at all, wins more with placement, and some of her serves were underarm, although it didnt make much of a difference as her normal serve was crap anyway. I dont think she'll be in the top 200.

Sun def Kucova

I only saw the first set where Sun won 6-0 and I'm surprised it went to 3. Sun was absolutely dominating the match after she got out of the first few close games. Her serve and forehand are awesome weapons, some of the best shots I saw today. Kucova had good defense so it took a bit longer to put her away but Sun got the job done. Apparently in the 2nd set Kucova started to play much better though.

I'll post a few pics later, maybe tomorrow.

Wow, that Chuang-Vierin match sounded horrible for both players. If I ever got to that point of exhaustion, I think I'd call for every medical timeout possible. Lol. Did they get a break after the second set? If they didn't, then gosh.

When you say Skavronskaia was a huge girl, do you mean in height or girth? I've heard that she's quite tall and hits the ball very hard, but I wasn't sure if she was a "big" girl or a big girl.

Thanks for the report. Good to see such great comments on Sun's game. She must have picked up her serve, which is good to hear! You have to have a lot of respect for players such as Nathalie and Chuang, to go 11-9 in the third in such hot weather. Looks like an ugly ugly match by the looks of the stats though. Some great results for me today!
