Re: Dayana Yastremska

Dayana vs Konta are scheduled first up on center court on Monday.

Konta won their previous match in a fairly routine manner, so Dayana needs to bring her A game to avenge the Eastbourne loss.

She did it and destroyed her 6/3 6/2.

That was one of the best overall matches I've seen her play. She wasn't peaking in striking the ball like in Hong Kong, but her aggression was more controlled and patient than I'm used to seeing.

All year her coach has been telling her to go hard down the middle and then move her opponent and today she actually was doing it. Usually she is too impatient in going for the lines and trying to redirect everything.

If she can reduce her DF's and get her serve percentage up a bit, she can really be a threat.

Re: Dayana Yastremska

Obviously a good win for Dayana but honestly I think this wasn't a bad match up for her. If Dayana is playing well players like Jo will struggle to get her out of her rhythm. It's a bit like when I watch Maddy- I love it when players hit the ball hard at her and don't make her think too much.As does she.

It's the sneaky players you have to watch.

Dayana still has off games, off sets, off days - with her game probably always will have to some level. But they seem to be getting rarer and the good results happening more consistently. And whisper it she seems to be getting a bit more patient.Sometimes.

Career is really progressing nicely at this point in my opinion.

Yeah, she can compete with any big power player, but aggressive all court players like Muchova or Barty can give her problems. I don't know if I'd call Bencic an all court player, but she probably anticipates Dayanas shots better than anyone.

I want to see how she would fare against the elite defenders. I would imagine Halep and Kerber would make things tough on her, but I think she would overpower Svitolina or Woz.

Agreed, she is producing some solid results while still managing to avoid being overly hyped up. If she keeps working on her patience, she should be a fixture inside the top 20 with an elite peak level.

Here's a nice interview with Dayana including talking a bit about Ivanka.

Re: Dayana Yastremska

A bad day at the office for Dayana today.

I expected a close battle but Dayana never found her rhythm and Kenin was way to solid on the critical points while Dayana was just the opposite. Kenin has become a pretty tough out if you're not playing your best so it's not a bad loss.

Hopefully Dayana can find a little more consistency on her serve in Cincy and go a little farther there.

I did not watch the whole match, but from what I saw, Sonia was impressive and was able to handle the pace of Dayana and redirect it with depth and she also served very well. She was also taking the ball so early and took time from Dayana who never had time to settle, for me that win is full credit to Sonia who put pressure on Dayana during the whole match.

I really think that players like Kenin, Bencic,Kerber or Halep will be bad match up for her when they are on a good day.

That probably explains why the same court seemed like it was playing slower than the day before against Vika. In the beginning of the match I thought either Dayana is trying to be patient or the heavy weather conditions slowed the court as it seemed to take Dayana a few games to hit a winner lol.

Sonia also served very well. Dayana never really got her ROS game going. So much of Dayana's success has been because of her ROS. I think all her break opportunities came in only 2 games. She can't beat 'em if she can't break 'em.

Re: Dayana Yastremska

Dayana beats Woz 6-4 6-4 in a mixed performance.

Dayana needs to find consistency on her serve if she expects to challenge for the titles. In the 1st set Dayana had 8 DFs and a 41% first serve percentage. Between sets her coach told her to back off going for her 1st serve and just get them in. Dayana started the set just rolling in the 1st serve and also eliminated the DF's in the second set. Luckily Caro doesn't have the ROS weapons to hurt Dayana, but there's no way she can serve like that and expect to win against anyone with a decent ROS.

On a positive side, it does seem as though she is really trying to be more patient. She needs to improve on picking the proper spots to play patient though. Her natural instinct is to attack the ball so this will continue to be a work in progress. Match point here was a good example of doing it properly.

Re: Dayana Yastremska

Dayana lost a tough match against Sveta. Svetlana was defending outstanding by playing way off the baseline but with the power to return with depth. Dayana could really benefit from developing a decent drop shot from the baseline. It would have come in handy against Svelana's tactics. Sveta basically was able to out-grind Dayana, but it was a great effort from both players. It's good to see Svetlana in form.

Dayana also seemed to sprain her ankle in the final game. I could sense the haters hoping for a retirement just to give them more to hate. Hopefully it's minor and doesn't impair her preparation for the USO. Get well and have a good time in NY.
