Maybe for once Vika can take advantage, but I am shocked by how weak this entry list is . The WTA's horrid road map really has succeeded in killing off the rest of the tour .
Is Martha in qualifying? I would imagine she will either want to get in or take a wildcard as well if her body allows it.
Besides Venus, it seems very strange for Serena Williams not to enter either when her part-time schedule has not been working out too well and this event is one of the very few that she actually played last year. That decision makes me think once again that her knee is worse than she is letting on. Not even Keys who usually loves playing in the USA but has also become more or less a part-time player, which doesn't make sense either but makes me think she must have some sort of chronic injury that she is not sharing.
EDIT: The more I look at this list, the more I'm shocked by how few elite or even semi-elite players are here. Did the new venue suck or something? Even Konta as a former winner and having scored one of the best wins of her life here last year isn't playing .
The problem is that the DC event is chained to the ATP schedule. Ideally San Jose could move forward a week maybe, but they might think that move would lead players to prioritize DC and weaken the San Jose field, although it can barely be much weaker than this years.
I recently talked to some friends in the Bay Area who had attended the Stanford tournament for years and years and went to San Jose last year. They said the facilities (and stadium) at this event were horrible compared to at Stanford and the venue is not in a nice part of town. If those conclusions are true they help explain the weak list this year, but I hope the tournament/USTA can get it together before yet another US tournament dies.
