Great work OP

A different take on Russian #1 is Safina with 26 weeks as WTA #1 and Sharapova with 21 weeks.

Re: Russian Number 1 ranked players (1995-2014)

Really shows how Kournikova lead the way for the Russian assault and must have had a huge influence on the Russian juniors and even those just on the precipice of breaking through, something she's not given much credit for.

Many of these girls were coming with or without Kournikova, she doesn't deserve credit for anyone else's achievements damn it.

Re: Russian Number 1 ranked players (1995-2014)

I always looked at Likhovsteva as a trail blazer. Not the reason the women started playing, but to have another Russian playing on the main tour, and playing doubles with so many of them as they started their careers (Petrova, Kuznetsova, Zvonareva, etc.) was such a help.

Those stats are quite surprising - I would have thought Sveta in particular would have been Russian #1 for longer.

Re: Russian Number 1 ranked players (1995-2014)

The Russians behind Sharapova are too inconsistent to overtake Sharapova if she does go down the rankings. This isn't 2007-2010, where Dementieva was still playing, and Zvonareva, Safina and Kuznetsova were still consistent.
They just need a drug

Will Maria lose her Russian #1 ranking in 2015?

Anna :worship:

Who said you were useless

First, Merry (Gregorian) Christmas.

Second, Anna lowered the bar for Russian #1 to such depth that it was a laughing stock.
That is like having Sloane US #1.

Thank God for Myskina, Safina , Dementieva, Kuzzy... for bringing credibility to what it means to be Russian #1

Re: Will Maria lose her Russian #1 ranking in 2015?

Interesting thread and statistics. I never fully realised how long KOURNIKOVA was "the first Russian".
To answer the question, i personally don't see Masha loosing her position any time soon  (bar injuries :( )

Who even cares about this?
+1 :yeah:

I guess MaSha herself has nothing to care with loosing Russian Number One as far as it doesn't mean loosing World Number One to another Russian.

But Shoulder and Serena are far more crucial reasons to focuse anyway.

This thread will turn anyway very soon in MaSha Haters party and/or Russia bashing.

Re: Will Maria lose her Russian #1 ranking in 2015?

In 2016. maybe, but atm I don't see any Russian girl who will come remotely close to Maria in rankings. Even Makarova will have trouble to keep her current place, because almost half of her ranking points come from Wimbledon and USO
