Re: Fed Cup Croatia 2019

Croatia beat Turkey 2-1 !
But embarrassing that it was so close ...

Konjuh lost to Buy !
Poor serving: 10 DFs. Only 37 1st serve % ! Buy had 75 %.
And Ana did not take her chances. BPs won: Ana 4 of 12 and Buy 4 of 5.

Stupid decision from Iva to put Ana in singles
Why did Iva not play Fett or Lukas instead of extremely rusty Konjuh ???

At least Donna Vekic won
But only 7-6 6-3 over Ozgen. A lot harder than I expected.

And important they won doubles of course !
Fett/Jurak won 6-4 6-4.

Jelena: "If I had to pick someone after me, I'd pick Serena."

Re: Fed Cup Croatia 2019

^ You really think Fett or Lukas would stand a better chance than Konjuh in that match? I disagree. Jana is very unstable emotionally these days, loses matches left and right from winning positions, and her only win this year is against a girl who is ranked outside top 150. As for Lukas, she still hasn't made a win this year, and last month she lost to someone ranked outside of top 750, so I think Iva actually made a good decision. She wants Ana to play as much as possible, to get some matches under her belt and hopefully starts hitting the ball better in time for some more important matches. Besides, we have Donna in the from of her life, and Darija in doubles, so it wasn't that risky to put Ana inside.

No idea which team we're playing tomorrow, but against Georgia I'd actually give it a shot with Ana and Jana in singles, and Darija/Jana for doubles, to rest Vekic for the ties with Serbia and hopefully GB, since she did play a lot of tennis lately and doesn't need to risk overdoing it against the weakest team.

Re: Fed Cup Croatia 2019

Better an unstable one (Fett/Lukas) than an extremely rusty one with zero chance to win (Konjuh).
I knew that Ana would never win this match. And to win one set is not enough.
As we saw with Ana's loss to Buy (with some horrible serving) it was quite risky to play her.

Anyway with Martic in the team Croatia would have a big chance to reach WG 2 play-offs.
Now without her it will be hard to beat GB. Vekic must win + then Croatia needs a doubles win.
(Croatia should win their group quite easily. Georgia is easy, Serbia a bit trickier.)

Re: Fed Cup Croatia 2019

I thought that Ana actually performed better than expected, I saw this as a rather straightforward loss before the match started, but she managed to turn it around and take a set, which under the circumstances is really good, and she was on equal terms with her opponent for the first half of the 3rd set, so I think she did better than either of the two mentioned before would, but anyway, it's important that they won in the end. Yes, things would be easier with Petra in the team, but what can you do, there's always someone missing... If Ana can raise her game a little in the following days, I'd say we are not without chances even against GB.

Croatia, Serbia secure opening day wins in Bath

06 Feb 2019

Lee Goodall

Croatia and Serbia got their Fed Cup by BNP Paribas weeks in England off to a positive start with opening day victories at the University of Bath on Wednesday.

The Serbs were the first team to get a win on the board when they beat Georgia 2-1 in Pool B of the four-day Europe/Africa Zone Group I event. Soon afterwards Croatia came through a tight deciding doubles to edge past Turkey 2-1.

The Croats certainly didn’t have everything their own way though and had to come from 1-0 down after Turkish No. 2 Cagla Buyukakcay beat her opposite number Ana Konjuh 75 26 63 in the opening singles.

The highest-ranked player in Bath, world No. 25 Donna Vekic, levelled the tie when she edged past a stubborn Pemra Ozgen 76(0) 63 before Jana Fett and Darija Jurak were just a bit too good for Buyukakcay and Ozgen during a 64 64 doubles victory.

“It’s very intense and very difficult and we’ve been in this format for many many years and I’m just hoping we can get out of it finally,” said Croatia’s captain Iva Majoli, a former French Open champion and world No. 4.

“These other teams have nothing to lose and the girls play at a better level than they often produce at regular tournaments. We have to be 200 per cent ready for these matches.”

Konjuh, a former top-20 player, was playing only her second match since Wimbledon last year after ongoing injury problems but Majoli is hoping more court time this week will help build the 21-year-old’s self-belief.

“Ana has been struggling with injuries and until the last minute we weren't sure who’d play the second match, but I decided to put her in to bring some confidence back. Unfortunately it was a tough day for her and the girls had to finish it in the doubles. Thank God they did!”

Although Vekic admitted after her singles victory that she is a little jaded after reaching the final of the WTA Premier event in St Petersburg last week, she says the tennis she has so far produced in 2019 has been the best of her career.

“St Petersburg was really good for me, I had five good matches,” Vekic said. “For sure I’m a little bit tired but the other girl played really good today so I’m happy I got the win. I’m playing really well at the moment, I’ve worked really hard for it and I think if I keep working hard then hopefully I’ll continue to have success.”

The 22-year-old has had some of her best results on British soil in the past having won one of her two WTA titles in Nottingham in 2017 as well as reaching the fourth round at Wimbledon last summer. She also picked up a $10,000 ITF trophy in Chiswick back in 2011.

“Oh my God yes, that was maybe my first professional tournament win,” she said. “I do like playing in England, it does feel a little bit like home for me and I do like a bit of Nando’s as well!”
Iva also was not sure at all to put Ana in (who then lost), with 10 DFs and wasting chances ...
Yes, I was also relieved when Croatia won. Much harder than expected tie.

No idea whatever Nando is

Fett announced for the 2nd rubber, vs. #151 Gorgodze. Good choice to give Donna a day off.

Re: Fed Cup Croatia 2019

So let's hope for the playoff-match against GB, then we'll see our girls for sure

But for now:
Great that Iva gave Ana another chance. Even though she's rusty as hell, she needs this badly and Iva knows that.
Also Bolkvadze shouldn't be a problem for Ana IMO
