The strongest field of the year outside Wimbledon. Only Nancy Richey isn't here. Jill Cooper replaces #4 seed Ann Jones when the 1969 Wimbledon champ announces her pregnancy.

There was a lot of controversy swirling around the participation of the the Virginia Slims troupe. The event denied accepting the "One Dollar Dollies" en masse as a group, but this was clearly the case, and many non-Slims girls were upset at having to qualify. The British girls ranked 5 through 9 complained about not being accepted directly into the draw.

World #1 Margaret Court admitted over tea with British reporter that she felt the cold shoulder from the Slimsies, saying, "Some of them will not even speak to me now. It's stupid and childish." Court had considered joining the troupe, but backed off when Gladys Heldman told her of the number of events she would have to commit to. With almost all of the events in the US Margaret felt it was too much of a demand for me.
