DF: Helga Masthoff/Virginia Wade [1] d Lesley Bowrey/Helen Gourlay [2] 5-7 6-2 6-2

The women's prize money is one tenth of the men's. Virginia Wade finally gets her first major victory on European red clay over a denuded filed. Ginny relished her wins over clay court experts Hosel and Mastoff. Helga in particular was a bete noir, having won their last 3 encounters on dirt.

Wade's only scare all week came in the QF from Neumanova, a Czech gym teacher who serves first serves left handed and second serves right handed! Marie led 6-1 5-3, but Wade clawed back and easily won the tiebreak. At 4-5 in the third Wade held to stay in it, finally breaking serve at 5-5 in a game that went to deuce 9 times

Per the NYT both singles finals take place on May 10. Laver wins the top prize of $10,000 at the $45,000 event. Wade wins $1,000. Rod plays before 10,000 on the Centre Court at the Foro.

Draw note: Eisel or Curtis?

Also called the Tulsa Clay Courts. A totally amateur event with no prize money. Mary Ann Eisel Curtis, the top seed, has loads of Evert trouble. 13 year old Jeannie Evert had 2 match points in the second set. After squeeking out a close win Curtis refused to speak with reporters.

In the final she ran into older sister Chrissie. Chris Had beaten Marcie Louie for the first time (the two defeats coming in junior play) in the semis. Evert had blown a lead vs Curtis in her first senior event back in 1969. There was no repeat this day, as she won 10 games in a row before Mary Ann even got on the scoreboard.
