Drake, Pelletier get wild cards
TORONTO (CP) - Toronto's Maureen Drake and Marie-Eve Pelletier of Repentigny, Que., have been granted wild cards for the 2003 Rogers AT&T Cup.
Drake and Pelletier will be entered into the singles main draw of the $1.325-million Cdn event, which begins Aug. 11 at York University.
Drake, Canada's top-ranked singles player at No. 122, will be making her 12th Rogers AT&T Cup appearance. Her best showing was a second-round appearance in 1999.
Pelletier, currently ranked third in singles in Canada, will be making her sixth appearance at the Rogers AT&T Cup, her first main draw appearance. The 21-year-old, ranked 143rd in the world, has been a member of Canada's Fed Cup team since 2002.
Five of six qualifying wild cards have also been announced.
Former Montreal resident Beier Ko, Aleksandra Wozniak of Blainville, Que., Ontario's Diana Srebrovic and Ekaterina Shulaeva, and Stephanie Dubois of Laval, Que., will be in action this weekend, looking to secure a spot in the main draw.
The final qualifying spot will be determined through pre-qualifying.
Toronto's Sonya Jeyaseelan and Katarina Zoricic, Monika Dancevic of Niagara Falls, Ont., and Melanie Gloria of Montreal were to begin pre-qualifying matches Wednesday.
The main draw of the 2003 Rogers AT&T Cup is made up of 56 spots: 40 direct acceptances, 12 qualifying spots and four wild cards.
The final wild card will be announced later this week.
