Um, lets see, because she's supported Fed Cup and Tennis Canada Junior Development for years, because shes the number 2 singles player in Canada, and because she should be given the chance to play in front of her friends and family at home in Toronto one last time?

Drake, Pelletier get wild cards
Canadian Press

8/6/2003

TORONTO (CP) - Toronto's Maureen Drake and Marie-Eve Pelletier of Repentigny, Que., have been granted wild cards for the 2003 Rogers AT&T Cup.

Drake and Pelletier will be entered into the singles main draw of the $1.325-million Cdn event, which begins Aug. 11 at York University.

Drake, Canada's top-ranked singles player at No. 122, will be making her 12th Rogers AT&T Cup appearance. Her best showing was a second-round appearance in 1999.

Pelletier, currently ranked third in singles in Canada, will be making her sixth appearance at the Rogers AT&T Cup, her first main draw appearance. The 21-year-old, ranked 143rd in the world, has been a member of Canada's Fed Cup team since 2002.

Five of six qualifying wild cards have also been announced.

Former Montreal resident Beier Ko, Aleksandra Wozniak of Blainville, Que., Ontario's Diana Srebrovic and Ekaterina Shulaeva, and Stephanie Dubois of Laval, Que., will be in action this weekend, looking to secure a spot in the main draw.

The final qualifying spot will be determined through pre-qualifying.

Toronto's Sonya Jeyaseelan and Katarina Zoricic, Monika Dancevic of Niagara Falls, Ont., and Melanie Gloria of Montreal were to begin pre-qualifying matches Wednesday.

The main draw of the 2003 Rogers AT&T Cup is made up of 56 spots: 40 direct acceptances, 12 qualifying spots and four wild cards.

The final wild card will be announced later this week.

Sonya beat Dancevic 6-1, 6-1, and Zoricic beat Gloria in 3 sets - the two will play tomorrow for the final spot

Hopefully Sonya will go through to earn the wildcard

I wonder who will get the final maindraw wildcard? I am assuming it's going to go to Melanie Marois because Vanessa ridiculously isn't getting one, and Jana Nejedly hasn't played since the French Open so perhaps she is injured.

"Religion has actually convinced people that there is an invisible man living in the sky who watches everything you do, every minute of every day. And the invisible man has a special list of ten things he does not want you to do. Any if you do any of these ten things, he has a special place, full of fire and smoke and burning and torture and anguish, where he will send you to live and suffer and burn and choke and scream and cry forever and ever 'til the end of time!

But he loves you."
