Summary:

Things progressed as predicted in the early rounds. There a steady Shirley Bloomer upset #3 seed Louise Brough. Brough has gotten more nervous with age, often having to catch errant service tosses. Shirley kept good length and lobbed Brough to death whenever Louise came in.

Top seed Shirley Fry had some uneasy moments when Margaret duPont won a set with her wily chops and forays to net. She has aged like Brough though, and at almost 38 Mrs DuPont was just too old for the fast Fry. With both Brough and duPont out by the semis it felt like the final passing on an era.

Betty Pratt is having her best year ever after marriage and a move to Jamaica. She won over favored Dottie Knode in a 3 set quarterfinal. "Just as Bloomer owed her victory over Brough to the lob, so Betty owed hers to the drop shot. After losing the first set by being outhit, Betty found her touch and scored a win which should serve as a lesson to younger players. Drop shots and more drop shots, spins and change of pace had Dottie always uncertain and chasing up and down the court rather than side to side, which she prefers. Betty has better a sound and shrewd tactician." (World Tennis, p19).

Darlene Hard had opportunities against Althea Gibson and blew them. Up 5-3 and holding two set points, she wasted one on a double fault. The destructive pattern persisted; at 7 all she served 4 consecutive double faults. From that point a close match turned into a blowout-final score 9-7 6-1.

The first semi was a tale of two Shirleys. World #1 Shirley Fry was just as steady as the British Shirley Bloomer. Her added ability at net and extra pace off the ground made the difference in two tight 6-4 sets. The match was played on the grandstand. Althea Gibson was rolling over Pratt 6-1 4-1 when things became interesting. Betty used change ups and serve and volley and Althea got a bit tight. Big Al won the match on her 6th match point .

The glorious autumn of Shirley Fry's career finally sees her crowned the US champion after 15 years of trying. Windy conditions helped the calmer and cooler Fry. Althea made too many errors and was uncertain at net. All and all it was a forgettable final but a lovely swan song for Fry, who retired at the end of the year.

Fry was encouraged by good friend and former double partner Doris Hart, who flew in a see Shirley hoist the trophy.
