Draw Notes:

The opening round is called the Preliminary Round. As a result the 1st round is what we would today call the quarterfinals.

The 6-5 scores in the openig couple of rounds are not errors.

Helen Booth and Grace Booth default as a team in the ladies doubles, but then Grace Booth appears with Kathleen Atkinson.

Summary:

In 1896 bicycle tennis was the latest (and short lived) fad and double faults were called "double baulks".

Originally slated to start on June 16, rain washed out the entire first day. The big news on the 16th was the arrival of Juliette Atkinson, the defending champion. Juliette's injured foot was in a plaster of Paris cast since Saturday the 13th, but she was game to defend her title. Entourages apparently were not unknown then, for the New York Sun reported she came 'with a party friends and other New York players'.
