Dokic: "It was not about her (Bartoli) being the better player."

Dokic done in by nerves

She’s in her 15th year on tour, has six career singles titles and had most of the country in her corner during her fairytale quarter-final run at the 2009 Australian Open. But it seems nothing makes Jelena Dokic as nervous as playing in front of a home crowd.
The former world No. 4 was largely wiped off the court by Frenchwoman Marion Bartoli at the Apia International Sydney on Tuesday 6-0 6-3 and admitted she was on edge.
“It was unfortunate,” the 28-year-old said.
“I froze out there … It was not about tennis. It was not about her being the better player. I just really, really got nervous. Yeah, I really froze.
“My legs and my arms and everything just couldn’t move.”
Dokic said her nerves were a combination of factors including the fact she had only played a handful of matches in the last six months and because she’s endured a stop-start run with injuries since that remarkable Melbourne Park experience three years ago.
But it was also the venue.
“Sydney for me is different,” said Dokic, who did enjoy a memorable run here to the bronze medal playoff match against Monica Seles at the 2000 Olympics.
“It’s difficult because I grew up here. You know, I always want to do well here.”
She said Samantha Stosur – who has borne the weight of even more public expectation but has struggled in Australia, knew the feeling well.
“I think it’s hard. You see it with Sam also,” said Dokic who added she actually felt fit and in quite good form.
“It’s very hard to play for us at home because we want to do so well.
“I think in a way it’s a good lesson. No matter how much you think you are experienced in your tennis career, you always can learn something every day.”

As long as she doesn't get that nervous in Melbourne

Australian women all seem to suffer from this.

Player forum.

And stop trying to make something out of nothing. "It's not about her being the better player" implies more that Bartoli was the better player (which she was) rather than anything else.

So, she thinks that if she werent nervous, she would have beaten Marion easily?

She didn't say that. I think what she meant that the nature of the defeat was due to her nerves rather than Marion being so much better than her.

She doesn't say that.

What she says is that nerves played a factor in this match, which they did.

How big a factor they played is irrelevant and she certainly doesn't say that she would have beaten Marion easily, if that's what you get from reading that then i would suggest you read it again.

well she did play bad on all the chances she had in the second set, she could've easily been up 4-0 and win the set

I don't understand what you mean. And in my opinion Jelena is right. Bartoli isn't/wasn't the better tennis player, but she was mentally stronger, so she deserves the win of course, but there's no way Bartoli is better (tennis-wise).

Re: Dokic: "It was not about her (Bartoli) being the better player."

As big a fan as I am, I do think at this point Marion is without a doubt the better player. Watching the match I felt like Marion could have turned it up another level; Jelena was frequently wrong-footed and out of position so Marion wasn't really having to aim for the lines or producing sharp angles. Jelena has to play such high risk tennis to compete with these top players because many times they get balls back that Jelena anticipates will be a winner.

I agree with those who said Jelena isn't saying she is better. I think she was saying that she didn't play well enough to give herself a chance. But the nature of Dokic's game is that you aren't going to beat her if she plays her best. The problem is she can't produce her best for any extended period of time in a match.

Bartoli won the match 6/0 6/3. She was clearly the better player on the court. She didn't serve 11 double faults and she didn't waste every opportunity she had.

Besides mental strength and taking your chances is part of being a good tennis player, As much as I love Jelena. at this time in their careers Bartoli is the better player, however if Jelena continues to improve I'm sure she can reach that level again.

Had Jelena being the better tennis player, she would have played more balls in that her oponnent. She did not, hence she lost, and quite easily.

The rest are just pathetic excuses.
