Who cares of hypertrophic weapons when the player on the court moves like music?

Doesn't have to be jazz. I think trip-hop and other styles could work great too. Maybe some post-punk entries could hangover into this.

There are some trip-hop songs that could work, yes. Portishead music particularly often has a very noirish feel about it. And yes, over the last few decades there have been a few neo-noir films which have had a modern punk edge to them, so yes, certain moody post-punk entrees could work as well. Modern neo-noir films have untilised a wide range of musical genres over the years. That said, when I think of film noir I tend to think about films from the 1940s and 1950s. And the vast majority of these films are enhanced by moody jazzy soundtracks.

I must confess, classic 1940s Film Noir movies are a great passion of mine. I adore the black and white films from that era and along with 1930s/1940s screwball comedies, and 1960s European new wave films, those 1940s film noir pictures are ones that I still most enjoy watching. Yeah, given the choice between a 1940s film directed by Robert Siodmak, Otto Preminger, Nicholas Ray or Fritz Lang and a contemporary movie I will always opt for the 1940s flick.

Robert Mitchum, Peter Lorre, Gloria Grahame, Humphrey Bogart, Veronica Lake, Barbara Stanwyck, Gene Tierney, John Garfield, Edward G Robinson, I love all these guys and gals so much.

I have a typical film noir record in my CD collection among others, Lydia Lunch's Smoke in the Shadows. It's great to set an atmosphere.

Our French master Claude Nougaro. Brilliant, mindblowing... great art.

I think that Film Noir is mostly 80% of jazz music. The best possible music and no one will fail if they "try" to submit great jazz pieces. In before I hear annoying "noises".

That actually works a treat.

Hangover Hotel and the Terry Edwards collaboration, Portrait of the Minus Man. from the same album would also be great for this game. Actually most of this album would fit in perfectly here.

Awesome movie. Jane Randolph is brilliant in this scene. Also have to say I adore Simone Simon, one of France's greatest actresses.

Jacques Tourneur was such a brilliant director whenever he got a movie he could get his teeth into. This film and I Walked With A Zombie are both incredibly atmospheric and creepy. I guess both would be classified as horror movies in a way but both had a totally noirish direction to them. There's really nothing horrific in either film, just this thick menacing ambience. Tourneur was such a master of the contrast between light and darkness and the use of shadow. He was a genius the way he used the limitations of black and white film and turned it to his advantage. He used sound incredibly well too. Yeah, this scene is totally awesome.

I love Out Of The Past as well. That's a more conventional film noir but still brilliant with some great performances and another film that one that worked perfectedly in black and white. Oh, and I watched Night of the Demon again last week and that too has some thrilling scenes. I love the way a director like Tourneur can draw a viewer into a film with an understated subtlety and simply create a sense of foreboding by his own directorial skills without ever having to resort to actually filming any blood or violence. He knew how to use the power of suggestion in a way filmmakers of today could only dream of.

it's not. just look at "blade runner", which is even given as an example in the description and has a perfectly fitting soundtrack that couldn't be further from jazz.

Johnny Mandel's score for I Want to Live! (a rather late-period noir) is just

Anyway, jazz is way more related to classic noir films. The scores of neo-noir films are much more difficult to put in a single category especially when considering how many different genres have influenced them - from Tarantino's mixture of noirs and exploitation films to Almodσvar's noirish Douglas-Sirk-styled melodramas. The scores reflect that.
