Christmas Songs - yes I was am and still serious about it.
I am absolutely in favour of a Christmas songs contest, but please, not in August.
Seriously though, I would be disappointed if we don't have a Christmas themed game sometime this December.
Actually the idea of seasonal contests and contests related to specific dates make a lot of sense to me. Two contests I would very much like to see happen are a Horror/Scifi themed contest to take place around Holloween, October 31 and a contest to honor the 10th anniversary of the passing of the UK's greatest ever disc jockey John Peel, also this October. I feel particularly strongly about the John Peel contest. This is a man who probably had a greater influence on British music between 1970 and 2005 than any other person on the planet. A contest in which on could select from all the artists who have ever recorded a session for Mr Peel would result in a fine contest and a fitting tribute to the great man.
Artists not yet submitted in the game
First Song (any artist, but have to be the first song they ever released, was the one I would've picked if Mr Sandman had been one place higher in the girls group theme
Both of these are excellent sugestions, I'd say. I particularly like the first song contest. It is remarkable how often an musician's best recording turns out to be their first. Very often, musicians that start out with some great ideas and ideals will quickly because worn down and jaded by the music industry over a period of time and hence often a musician's early work is the most unique, honest and fresh of their career.
A few people have suggested a contest of artists never before selected, and I have to say I would be very much in favour of such a contest. Any contest that encourages the participants to dig a little bit deeper is a good thing as far as I'm concerned. As it happens I have selected an artist not previously selected in every game of these contests thus far.
Obviously 1970s, 1950s, and even 2000s are all worth doing too, and yeah hopefully it wont be too long before we revisit the 60s as that does seem to have delivered very satisfactorily.
More "Letter" Based Competitions (e.g. "B")
Maybe a "father-based" competition like there was for our dear mothers. Would be good in a couple of month around Father's Day
All great suggestions, although, yeah, ideally the best time to do a Fathers-based contest probably would be around Fathers Day.
Artists who started on Reality Competition Shows(IE any Countries version of X Factor,The Voice,Pop Idol)
I don't object to a Reality Contestants category exactly. In fact, I wouldn't object to any category any contest winner selected. If a contest winner wants to choose this as a category that is their choice. I have no doubt such a category would find the necessary participants too.
I have to say however, on principle if such a category was selected, I would without question make that the 1st contest I did not participate in. I feel nothing but loathing towards the whole trend of reality song contests and my participation in such a game would inevitably be a divisive one anyway, hence such a contest would be much better off without me. That is to say nothing of the fact that I doubt I could find a song I would find suitable for such a contest, and I would inevitably hate almost all the selections.
I've thought for a while that a "Guilty Pleasures" category could be interesting. It would be songs that people are ashamed to admit that they like. Could be interesting.
One hit wonders would be another.
I'm sorry but I have to say, my gut instinct tells me a "Guilty Pleasures" contest would almost surely result is a very low standard contest full of songs of acknowledged embarrassing taste. It is not a contest I would encourage any more than I would encourage a reality TV contest. But like the reality TV contest, if a winner of a game chose this as their category that would be their decision. I think that is another one I would be wise to sit out.
