Re: Matmagix's (mediocre) Song Game History

Game 195 - It's Plagiarism

Black Rivers - Voyager I

Well this is the third time I repeated this artist, probably milk more than it's worth The idea was to pick a song that copies some aspect of another song, or another artist's style. I chose this track which is Radiohead-esque (copies from the song Weird Fishes). It's a nice journey through indie synth-arrayed pop. The sonics are probably my favourite part about the song, so ethereal and indeterminate, fading in and out, and has a very suitable bridge of a guitar solo. As the song self describes, it is a like a journey through space, lonely, sad yet wonderful, always searching for something brighter. Admittedly it was a very strong game with plenty of well known rock fare, so I had low hopes, I qualified for the finals just, and finished 20th in the final. Probably better listening on its own, to be honest in absence of the others. Oh well, better next next time.

Miles out from home
We still hear a distant call
Searching heart is our common trait
A little luck and a twist of fate
My dear

Deep below, a diamond sky
It calls for you, for you
It calls for you

Your light
That I can see
From a distant past
From the deep
My love, my love

Game 196 - Victims of Wally

The Divinyls - Boys in Town

The theme required to pick a song that would probably be liked by Wally - or his style of music. I picked an 80s pubrock group fronted by Chrissie Amphlett, who as Queen Vika kindly mentioned, is probably Australia's most iconic female artist Kylie aside. This was one of their earliest pieces, so it wasn't as hard edged, but there is a nice rawness and unpolished simple nature to this track which gets me every time from those opening lines. The reviews were typically very favourable and I felt Chrissie does justice to the theme very well with a believable delivery. It finished 11th, could have been better (was 5th at one pt) but I'm not too unhappy about that given the competitive at the high end was rather fierce.

I must have been desperate
I must have been pretty low
I must have been desperate
I must have been pretty low
I was always driving home
All the boys in town
But they never telephoned
Get me out of here

You can see how Chrissie's vocal actually becomes more serious over the decade (this was my second choice send), perhaps I might send it later edition if it fits:

If you hadn't sent that divinyls song, I probably would have sent 'I touch myself' for the sex game

Updated history till game 196, and on front page:

Some very good highs (2 podium visits) but some very low lows too. I'll admit I didn't really send to please. Managed to reach 11th TFBSG career high ranking.

Yes I liked the mtf one. Didn't hear much of the playlist of that game, but probably was one of the best. I checked it back then when you called out Nathaliia for not giving points!

yeah I'm surprised cos she gave Die Antwoord in the African edition high pts though that was clearly terrible and tasteless. And Sleaford mods got top 5 for an amateur song while I end up with bottom 5 for a creative piece

Re: Matmagix's (mediocre) Song Game History

Game 198 - Let's Get It On

Bryan Ferry - Windswept

The edition theme, picked by Adam was Let's Get It On, meaning find a track that generates sensual or lustful mood. I decided to go for something light, but evocative. Bryan Ferry is a known romantic singer in the 80s known for his rich crooning vocals. His 1985 solo album Boys and Girls is a staple when it comes to love poetry, featuring his most famous track "Slave To Love". I decided to pick a less known song from that album, "Windswept". It is a much more private affair compared to the the others (with the exception of the moody tense title track, a fit for your Western film noir), and it seems as if Bryan is almost entranced or infatuated as he sings this, hence the title. The song clearly is inspired from latin folk dance, the acoustic guitar flittering in delight. As usual the production is a strong part of the track, with many elements, synth, a wailing saxophone, and a stirring drum track that keeps it pulsing. Midway through you get a nice pause of intensity as the cello pops in, but is quickly dispersed by the buzzing electric solo courtesy of Mark Knopfler. Bryan's vocal is desperately longing "oh I-I...am feeling swept away". The final verse and conclusion is a gliding culmination of all the elements channeling energies into each other as the listener is swept away. Atmospherically one cannot deny the alluring power of the track to generate "hungering lostness". It could be danced to as well (see the video clip). Of course I didn't expect much of a reception given the times (really something for the adults to enjoy moreso, finishing near last in the finals, and notably Beat, Utautai, Litotes and Monzanator gave the highest points in the final), but Mauriac did win with a slow sensual 80s number by Trent D'Arby.

Music video (bit out of sync but illustrates the windswept mood:

Slow, baby, you can take your time
I can hear nothing
Windswept is the tide

A feeling only or a state of mind
Gonna take me high, mama
Mama, take me high

Alternatively I may have sent the sophistipop track, "Don't Stop The Dance":

Game 200 - Anniversary Edition

Juice Newton - Angel of The Morning

Game 200 was the anniversary edition of BSG. I marvel at what Adey has done for so long, along with the participants for making it work. I started in 105 so it feels like a lot has happened in that time. I knew it would be a large game so I went with something relatively simple. I had heard this song played on the radio and I liked the sorrowful tone of the verses contrasted with the bright chorus. I almost think this is about a love affair ending...Juice is more of a country singer and some of the overtones can be heard. Incidentally I picked an alternative version of the song, which is a bit more extended and sung in a slightly earthier (lower) register. It didn't really appeal to people in reviews but some enjoyed it a lot and it finished 21st/28 in a theme with over 50 songs (having really scraped into the finals), so I can't be unhappy. Thanks to nottheone, John., Coco Hero and Hele. for highest points in the final.

Maybe the sun's light will be dim
And it won't matter anyhow
If morning's echo says we we sinned
Well, it was what I wanted now
And if we're the victims of the night
I won't be blinded by light

Just call me angel of the morning, Angel
Just touch my cheek before you leave me, baby
Just call me angel of the morning, Angel
Then slowly turn away

That's a wrap of mediocrity. Now after this game I promise to try and step things up...

Re: Matmagix's (mediocre) Song Game History

Game 201 - Expanding Horizons

Vanilla - Summer

This theme had us pick very recent discoveries. I had been looking for some soft chill electronic and came across this zapping instrumental track. It has a nice drum loop with looped building watery sequences and a high pitched warping howler-like alarm sound of the synth. Overall the sound is intense and urgent. I later discovered that the track is a direct sample of Kool and the Gang's Summer Madness (1974) before they produced disco tracks. Compared to the original, Summer is sped up and amplified (especially the drum track) considerably to add to the urgency and 'bounciness' of the track. In this sense it is a strange track, very smooth in the bass and backing sequence to mimic the effect of a summer breeze, and with morphing synthwork would work very well as a jazz track on its own, but the howler sequence almost produces a psychedelic vibe, which makes this track unique. Disappointingly it topped its semi final to finish 9th in the final. However I did enjoy double digit points from AdeyC, Random Run (1st 12), Leif and Dropshotace.

The original by Kool and the Gang (1974) for comparison, and perhaps a proof of how oldies can be goodies.

An alternative choice, a more smooth jazz lined tracks, highlighting simple pleasures through crisp soundscapes:

Game 202 - Animals

Eminem - Mockingbird

I don't really have much to say about this track, it was a difficult theme and I ended up going for an Eminem track which I think was quite poignant as it deals with Marshall Mathers' relationship with his daughter, having separated from his wife and his daughter's mother. In it, he apologises to his daughter for the mess it has and will cause but he promises to look after her the best he can. Eminem is often known for sounding angry and inflammatory in his rapping but here, the tone is sincere, melancholy and regretful. The song samples from a common children's nursery rhyme. Although it is relatively lowkey (and I expected it not to make the finals) I love the song for how direct and honest it is. Any single parent could easily sing from Eminem's perspective. For the depth of meaning, it's a great haunting song and shows Eminem's versatility.

Now hush little baby, don't you cry
Everything's gonna be alright
Stiffen that upper lip up little lady, I told ya
Daddy's here to hold ya through the night
I know mommy's not here right now and we don't know why
We fear how we feel inside
It may seem a little crazy, pretty baby
But I promise momma's gonna be alright

Game 203 - Among the Sierra Nevada

Karen Elson - Distant Shores

Mauriac picked a painting interpretation theme (similar to Beat's in Game 106). It is a landscape painting of the Sierra Nevada, a national park/mountain range in CA, USA. I went with a song to illustrate the idea of distance, borders and also being liberated. Karen Elson is known as a fashion icon but also released an album in 2010. Her latest album released in 2017 deals with her ending relationship with Jack White, and is clearly demonstrated in this track and "Call Your Name". In it she shares her closure, and relief at being freed from the difficult times of her past relationship. The track is quite simple and slow, focusing largely on her voice, with thin harp strings to accompany, and it is almost a breathtaking scene as she realises she can now let go, and move on. Ironically in her words it is almost difficult to detect any misery, or regret. "I watched you slip through my fingers, I saw the ship change course". "The waters were still and I could see/The borders of your land"

Unfortunately this track just missed the finals and I was surprised because vocals of Karen's tonal calibre tend to do well from what I've seen in the past. As a comparison, Lisa Hannigan's Paper House finished top 4 a couple games prior despite sounding quite similar, and I find Karen to have a stronger vocal tone. Perhaps there were just many tracks that overshadowed it in this specific theme and this seems to be the case as many of the pts were mid range only Also the slow and lowkey development of the track may have put some people off. In hindsight her other major single from Double Roses "Call Your Name" is probably more emphatic in the theme of reflecting and moving on from her breakup and probably would have done better. I may save it for later if a theme fits.

Sometimes I'm lost in a daydream
I'm trailing off to God knows where
The waters were still and I could see
The borders of your land.

Now my heart feels different
Shores between so distant

I am alone, I am free
No one's come and conquer me
Out in the waves, cast out to sea
You slip away from me

Re: Matmagix's (mediocre) Song Game History

Game 204 - Moonlighting

Richard O'Brien - The Time Warp

This theme, picked by Shvedbarilescu, required us to select a song that was recorded by someone who wasn't considered a professional musician as their primary career. I picked Richard O'Brien, who wrote The Rocky Horror Picture Show in 1973, a cult classic that has been adapted into a film version (1975) and has since become a staple theatre musical piece. The RHPC features of lot of songs but the two most memorable are "The Time Warp", and "Sweet Transvestite" (introducing the delectable Tim Curry as Dr. Frankenfurter, a sweet transvestite from Transexual, Transylvania). The Time Warp is a bluesy dance song complete with instructions from the Narrator "it's just a jump to the left, and a step to the right. Put your hands on your hips, you bring your knees in tight, but it's the pelvic thrust that really drives you insane...let's do the time warp again!" and is quite a fun upbeat song. The main verses are sung by Richard himself (as Riff-raff) and Magenta, and I love the way they do it with much personality, with Columbia entering for her tap dance routine midway. The song finished 9th in the final, a result I am happy with, particularly enjoyed by SilverPersian, The Crow, AdeyC and aerosmash.

(Riff Raff) It's astounding
Time is fleeting
Madness takes it's toll...

(Magenta) Ahh...

(Riff Raff) But listen closely...

(Magenta) Not for very much longer...

(Riff Raff) I've got to keep control.
I remember doing the Time Warp.
Drinking those moments when
The blackness would hit me.

(Riff Raff & Magenta) And the void would be calling.

(Guests) Let's do the Time Warp again.
Let's do the Time Warp again.

Game 205 - Funky House

Sneaky Sound System - Pictures (Tonite Only Remix)

I picked a remix of the song Pictures, a nice electronic pop track. The remix has is a bit more liberally creative, throwing in some extra drum loops, synths, guitar riffs. I thought the rhythmic component would be interesting to many but sadly it didn't really perform much better compared to my previous SSS send "UFO" (which finished 18th in the Australian edition F). A bit of a shame Ms. Connie's vocals get overlooked yet again. Here it ended at 17th. Not completely surprised as most of my Aussie selections flop anyhow though maybe the pop standard would have fared better.

Light comes, like a flicker in my left eye.
Push move, it'd be perfect if you walked by.
I've got lots of pictures in my head, you better not turn off the projector.
I've got lots of pictures in my head, you better not save them all for later.

The original:

Game 206 - 2K17

Big Sean ft. Migos - Sacrifices

Trap hiphop is one of the emergences of 2017 so I decided to pick a song to represent this. The song is a reflection from Big Sean about some of the sacrifices people commonly make to become successful, or get through life. I picked the song because I liked the rhythmic components that give a hypnotic vibe. It's a simple song with lot of unique arrangements and players, and Migos add some nice oomph during the middle of the song where it really gets interesting. Unfortunately it didn't quite register with most players who didn't really get it and preferred safer options, especially since it was a large game where semis had about 19-20 songs to pick from.

Paid all these dues with the game (yeah yeah)
Sacrificed yo stripes for that stain (Sacrifice)
Heard you sacrificed your life for that chain (yeah yeah)
She sacrificed that money for cocaine (white, phew, coco)
Left hand got three rings
That's Bron Bron, we up one
Bad bitch she a savage
Take her to the mall and buy her something
That's gonna wanna make your friends come
Make way with the Tommy gun
Why can't y'all recognize that we all came from sacrifice?
Why can't y'all recognize that we all came from sacrifice?
Ten toes yeah you gotta stay down aye
Just some young niggas looking for a way out, ayy
People watchin', yeah I gotta skip town, ayy
Hit my phone if you need a whole pound, ayy

Re: Matmagix's (mediocre) Song Game History

Game 207 - Perfect Wedding

Gus Dapperton - Ditch

I went for the 'new' part of the theme criteria, pick a song released 2015-2017. Gus Dapperton has nice synth happening reminscent of old school video games, and that caught me immediately on first listen, a mix of wonderful and also shades of melancholy all the same. There is a little bit of Tame Impala nestled away there. Gus is still relatively new to the scene, but his music and vocals seem quite uniquely branded. The subject matter is a bit odd, I haven't quite grasped the meaning The production may have been a bit strong for some listeners, so it didn't do as well as I wanted (I had top 5 in mind, finished 9th from 3rd in its semi). I got double digit pts from the usual suspects: Poldo, Leif, TF102, Maddox, and well as drg.

Arms around my head won't rest
So I, close my eyes instead
Harm around my head won't rest, i dread
So I, close my eyes instead

Blue
I want lots of you (ooh)
Oh, can't you seen I've grown? (grew)

Game 209 - Under the Influence

Bilderbüch - Spliff

The theme was to send a song relating to recreational substance use, and spliff is a slang for cannabis cigarette. I randomly did a search for songs relating to cannabis and this came up. Bilderbüch is an Austrian band (with German song lyrics) and I enjoyed the spice and quirkiness of the song, with good pacing and nice bassline. It does give you the feel of being rather relaxed and even rebellious and cheeky (the song is presumably about high school students taking a spliff! against school policy ). There were some nice comments in reviews, even suggesting the song was "sexy" , but I was really disappointed this was not reflected in the final scoring. I finished 16th, which seemed a bit unfair given the originality of my discovery. I surmised that the heavy abundance of familiar rock and indie rock groups in this game, plus the language barrier may have made people less likely to give pts to my song (the artist deliberately intends to make German pop appeal to broader audience), and I guess it maybe was a bit too relaxed for BSG taste

Decent translation provided here: https://www.musixmatch.com/lyrics/Bi...lation/english (see spoiler below)

Quite a hilarious song when you see it that way. Will admit to similar experience myself

Ich spielte immer braver Junge
I've always played to be the good boy
Habe nie was angestellt
never done anything wrong
Stets da, wie bestellt
Always there, like on order

Wie bestellt
Like on order
Lecko mio, dios mio
Holy cow! My God!
Da ist es schon um mich geschehen
And it's already over with me
Frau Professor haben mich erwischt
Mrs. Professor caught me
In meinen Händen einen Spliff (Spliff)
In my hands a spliff (spliff)
Mir dreht sich
My head spins
Mir dreht sich
My head spins
Doch bereuen
But i regret
Tu ich nichts
Nothing
Alle Kinder singen
All the kids sing
Spliff
Spliff
Komm, lass mich rein (Baby)
Come on, let me in (Baby)
Mir steht der Regen ins Gesicht
The rain stands up to my face
Frag mich nicht "Wie schau ich aus? Wo komm ich her? Was will ich hier?"
Don't ask me "How do i look? Where do i come from? What do i want here?"
Ich bin ein Streuner, ich hab mich wieder Mal verirrt
I'm a stray, I got lost, yet once again
Auch wenn mein Geruch dich irritiert
Even if my scent irritates you

Ich wollte wieder Mal zu dir
I just wanted to visit you again
Das letzte Bier sitzt tief in mir
The last beer is sitting deep in me
Doch bereuen nicht mit mir
But regretting... Not with me

Ich bin ein Spieler und ich kann nicht verlieren
I'm a gamer and i can't lose
Spiel jetzt nicht mehr braver Junge

For those interested they do have some other nice stuff, this one was pretty popular though maybe only @Beat will understand what it is about:

Oh I'll tag @JMG too, he didn't play this edition but curious about his thoughts

Game 210 - LGBTI

Scissor Sisters - I Don't Feel Like Dancing

I seldom send obvious vulture pieces but since a lot of my sends were being met with disdain, or underperformed badly, I decided to flip that aside and have some fun. This song was released way back in 2006 and was extremely well received reaching no.1 in UK and also in Australia. Co-penned with Elton John, it is a very nice piece of pop, with some glam rock elements thrown in. Rather quirky and definitely in your face with the vocal, and ironically a danceable piece considering the lyric. I remarked how when I first heard it, I thought it was sung by a female because of how high the vocals were, before I learnt that males can sing in falsetto tone, which is done amazingly by the lead singer, Jake Shears. The Scissor Sisters are not shy to emphasise the sexuality of their members either. You can tell just by way of style at least that Jake is gay (a few other members are too). The song ended up 2nd, and Beat took 1st honours given his massive lead in his semi final, so I can't really be disappointed, plus a podium after over 20 weeks, and career high no.5 (which will last for 5-6 games, after which my 166 win pts will come off )

But I don't feel like dancin' when the old Joanna plays
My heart could take a chance but my two feet can't find a way
You think that I could muster up a little soft shoe gentle sway
But I don't feel like dancin', no sir, no dancin' today
Don't feel like dancin', dancin'
Even if I find nothin' better to do
Don't feel like dancin', dancin'
Why'd you break it down when I'm not in the mood?
Don't feel like dancin', dancin'
Rather be home with the one in bed till dawn with you, you, you

I Don't Feel Like Dancing remains their most popular and successful song, though the breakout track was a cover of Pink Floyd's Comfortably Numb, which was critically appraised by David Gilmour himself.

Yes I saw the playlist few weeks ago and liked the song, didn't even know the band before. I checked out more, but realized Spliff is probably my only instant like. I also don't like his voice much and I'm not yet convinced if there is some meaningfulness to their songs/lyrics. Would still be interested in seeing them live, but to my surprise tickets cost 40+ €, which feels like negative value to me, and they even sell out most shows. They seem to get rated highly in general by all the reviewers.

Game 212 - Piano

Beethoven - Sonata Pathetique, Op. 13 1st movement (Grave / Allegro di molto con brio)

SilverPersian picked this theme, i.e. send any song that features a note(s) of piano. Piano is an extremely versatile instrument so it was tough for me to consider songs but I finally settled with a sonata by Beethoven, which is often overlooked (most people know Moonlight Sonata, but not Pathetique, and especially this 1st movement). The piece as a whole has three movements, with the 2nd and 3rd being much quieter and gentle. The first movement begins with a short Grave section (slow and serious), and the notes hang on with the sustain at low tempo, and deep, until a smooth run sets it flowing into a quite serious phase --> Allegro di molto con brio (quick, with lively movements). This second section comes across being quite forceful, yet delicate as there are bursts of energy and gentle pulses throughout. The left hand bass is very prominent in established the vigour of the piece. One youtube comment described this section as an argument/squabble between a couple, with one of the couple trying to placate the other. Indeed you do notice a near-dialogue helped by the interaction of the delicate quivering treble and assertive, thumping bass, as well as the varied arrangement of light playfulness and serious heaviness. There are some very impressive triplet lifts as the piece comes to a climax, before reverting to its grave opening (with a groaning twist) and finishing with its memorable key cadence (and cheekily too considering the aggressiveness of preceding sections).

Personally I find this piece to be one of Beethoven's most astounding works, illustrating his vivacity as a composer with much spirit, also considering how new the pianoforte would have been in his time. This one movement alone evokes so many emotions, varied textures and themes that keep the listener interested. In summary, just so much fun, certainly more rigorous and deeper than Für Elise could ever provide . Was pleased to see it enjoyed so much by MrPeanutButter, SilverPersian, Leif Muariac and wayitis, finishing 6th in the final and 3rd in its semis.

I have also embedded a live version of the complete sonata just so you can see how the fingers really work (and I mean WORK) and really shows that playing piano isn't simply about hitting the right keys but HOW you hit those keys to give life to a song.
