GB chat - Woking W25

This starts in 8 days and a bigger British contingent than most W25s. 6 already in the main draw, plus the usual 4 MDWCs. 9 currently in qualifying and well as 5 QWCs, and when you factor in the odd withdrawal, the 4 MDWCs, and possibly no SEs, there could be a few more on the alt list boosted up into the quals.

Main draw
1 Tereza SMITKOVA (CZE) 151
2 Ankita RAINA (IND) 171
3 Valentini GRAMMATIKOPOULOU (GRE) 193
4 Lesley KERKHOVE (NED) 201
5 Pemra OZGEN (TUR) 218
6 Diana MARCINKEVICA (LAT) 221
7 Naiktha BAINS (GBR) 225
8 Myrtille GEORGES (FRA) 239
9 Gabriella TAYLOR (GBR) 344
10 Greta ARN (HUN) 358
11 Samantha MURRAY (GBR) 360
12 Mai HONTAMA (JPN) 362
13 Andrea LAZARO GARCIA (ESP) 395
14 (Special Exempt, if needed)
15 (Special Exempt, if needed)
16 Magali KEMPEN (BEL) 13 (ITF ranking)
17 Emily APPLETON (GBR) 18
18 Amanda CARRERAS (GBR) 56
19 Alice GILLAN (GBR) 77

20 Silvia NJIRIC (CRO) 86

Qualifying
1 Vivian HEISEN (GER) 439
2 Oceane DODIN (FRA) 447
3 Estelle CASCINO (FRA) 469
4 Alicia BARNETT (GBR) 472
5 Sarah Beth GREY (GBR) 509

6 Yuriko Lily MIYAZAKI (JPN) 518
7 Emma RADUCANU (GBR) 525
8 Freya CHRISTIE (GBR) 534

9 Gabriella DA SILVA FICK (AUS) 537
10 Lou ADLER (FRA) 588 138
11 Alice TUBELLO (FRA) 616 204
12 Marianna ZAKARLYUK (UKR) 632
13 Qinwen ZHENG (CHN) 633
14 Jasmin JEBAWY (GER) 670
15 Yana MORDERGER (GER) 696
16 Pei-Chi LEE (TPE) 707
17 Victoria ALLEN (GBR) 714
18 Joanna GARLAND (TPE) 743
19 Tayisiya MORDERGER (GER) 774
20 Arlinda RUSHITI (SUI) 776
21 Emily ARBUTHNOTT (GBR) 789
22 Tiffany WILLIAM (GBR)

23 Olga HELMI (DEN)
24 Ines IBBOU (ALG)
25 Irys EKANI (FRA)
26 Aleksandra PITAK (GBR)
27 Sasha HILL (GBR)

K Ptiak is 1st Q alt, Ali Collins is 4th, so they most likely will get into Qs directly, and 8th alt Nadia Rawson might even end up in as well.

How do you see the MDWCs going? Angelica Blake is guaranteed one after impressively winning the Nottingham British Tour event, beating Freya Christie in the final. But who after that? You'd imagine Emma will be there, possibly Freya for reaching the final (even tough that only guarantees an unneeded QWC), and maybe Arbuthnott after reaching the final in that Uni event in Naples last week?

You often seem to see the same faces competing in these events. You rarely find a UK ITF event where Smitkova isn't here - she's either the defending champ here or Chiswick the week later. Most of those top 5 or 6 seeds seem to like competing here as well, and then there is of course a few who are based here like Mayazaki. Interesting to see Joanna Garland here (and also next week) - she'd likely be very high up in the MDWC pecking order if she switched her allegiances from Taiwan to GB. Hopefully she does in the coming year or two.

Lazaro-Garcia and Grammatikapolou have both withdrawn so Barnett will sneak in if there are no SEs, and Grey would be next alt. It also allows a couple of other GB players to sneak into quals directly.

Emma Raducanu has withdrawn, and wasn't entered for Chiswick anyway.

Wonder where she'll play next. These tourny's looked like decent opportunities for her

Victoria Allen was also on the quals list but pulled out at a similar time to Emma, so I'm hoping it's just them receiving MDWCs, which would certainly have been likely in Emma's case (to get one). It is a good opportunity because the field is very weak for a GB W25 - circa 500 will be the cut off for the direct entries before the lower ranked IRs are considered. There could be 8 British direct entrants in addition to the 4 MDWCs, and 3 seeds, so a great chance for a few to go on deep runs.

Re: GB chat - Woking W25

The freeze deadline has now passed, so I doubt we'll see many more changes until the qualifying draw is out on Sunday evening. Quite a few more withdrawals and it is looking very weak in comparison to previous GB W25 events.

Main draw
1 Ankita RAINA (IND) 171
2 Lesley KERKHOVE (NED) 201
3 Pemra OZGEN (TUR) 218
4 Diana MARCINKEVICA (LAT) 221
5 Naiktha BAINS (GBR) 225
6 Myrtille GEORGES (FRA) 239
7 Gabriella TAYLOR (GBR) 344
8 Greta ARN (HUN) 358
9 Samantha MURRAY (GBR) 360
10 Vivian HEISEN (GER) 439
11 Oceane DODIN (FRA) 447
12 Estelle CASCINO (FRA) 469
13 Alicia BARNETT (GBR) 472
14 Sarah Beth GREY (GBR) 509
15 Yuriko Lily MIYAZAKI (JPN) 518
16 Magali KEMPEN (BEL) 13 (ITF ranking)
17 Emily APPLETON (GBR) 18
18 Amanda CARRERAS (GBR) 56
19 Alice GILLAN (GBR) 77

20 Silvia NJIRIC (CRO) 86

Qualifying

1 Freya CHRISTIE (GBR) 534
2 Gabriella DA SILVA FICK (AUS) 537
3 Lou ADLER (FRA) 588
4 Alice TUBELLO (FRA) 616
5 Qinwen ZHENG (CHN) 633
6 Yana MORDERGER (GER) 696
7 Pei-Chi LEE (TPE) 707
8 Joanna GARLAND (TPE) 743
9 Tayisiya MORDERGER (GER) 774
10 Arlinda RUSHITI (SUI) 776
11 Emily ARBUTHNOTT (GBR) 789
12 Tiffany WILLIAM (GBR)

13 Olga HELMI (DEN)
14 Ines IBBOU (ALG)
15 Irys EKANI (FRA)
16 Aleksandra PITAK (GBR)
17 Sasha HILL (GBR)
18 Katarzyna PITAK (GBR)

19 Giorgie JONES (AUS)
20 Ali COLLINS (GBR)
21 Alessia TAGLIENTE (ITA)
22 Harriet HAMILTON (ITA)
23 Nadia RAWSON (GBR)
24 Victoria SUBEV (GBR)
25 Camille VERDEN ANDERSON (GBR)
26 Elisa VAN MEETEREN (GBR)
27 Jizel MATOS SEQUEIRA FERNANDES (GBR)

I've not really heard of the bottom 5 qualifiers, and the alt list below that is full of other GB players, bar one German, where the QWCs will come from. Blake already has her MDWC confirmed as previously mentioned.

Murray has had her ranking of 320 for a while now, and is ranked above Ahn, so that means Bains, G Taylor and Murray will all be seeds which is good.

Re: GB chat - Woking W25

Qualifying draw is out, and judging by who isn't in qualifying, it pretty much confirms no Emma here, if there was a tiny outside chance that she may have ended up with a MDWC.

Freya is the top Q seed so there will have been no late withdrawals from the main draw, meaning there will be 8 Brits playing in addition to the MDWCs. There are 4 Brit's in Freya's section so that means there will definitely be a British qualifier, so there should be 13 (at least) in the main draw.

Leylah Fernandez (same age as Emma) has obviously had a better junior career, being #2 and winning RG the other month, and will probably go further, but when you see her winning a home W25 title last week and reaching a home W80 final this week, and other talented juniors doing really well in the senior ranks, Emma's inactivity is a bit disappointing - Emma reached a W25 semi final last year when she just 15 and has only played about 4 tournaments since (reaching another W25 semi final earlier this year), so you'd think this double header would be ideal for her, especially as it is a pretty weak field. There's obviously no rush and she and her team will likely have it all mapped out (unless she is injured), but she would have been one of the most interesting players to follow here for sure.

Re: GB chat - Woking W25

And yet Emma hammered Leylah in straights the one time they played last year.

Quite possibly Emma is on another training block, but having watched her match against Liang, and seeing some of her other results this year, I think the lack of competitive matches is beginning to hold her back. Compared to Tauson (who I see as her key yardstick) and other contemporaries she hardly ever plays and she needs match practice to learn how to vary her game to deal with circumstance. You have to have a Plan B and it felt like Emma didn't have one in Wimbledon qualies or juniors.

Re: GB chat - Woking W25

Decent enough main draw. Angelica (guaranteed), Holly H, Ali Collins and Emily Arbuthnott were the 4 MDWCs. The expected other 8 are all in the main draw. Freya in on the brink of qualifying to join them (as expected), and 5 of the GB players have drawn qualifiers, so one could well be vs Freya. 2 others have an outside chance of joining Freya - Grace Piper and A Pitak, who both won their Q1 matches. Garland is also in the FQR.

There's definitely one all British match in the main draw.

Freya qualified easily. Not sure why she wasn't given a MDWC. Has she used up her quota for the year already?

She has one left apparently, which I'd imagine would be saved for either next week in Chiswick or the Roehampton double header in September, especially when she was top Q seed here in a pretty weak field, so (on paper) a much better chance of qualifying.

Obviously modest opponents in the respective weaker Hutchinson and Pitak siblings, but nice to see her get the job done with minimal fuss, and sets up an interesting R1 all GB match with Naiktha.

All 16 single's matches are tomorrow.

Re: GB chat - Woking W25

Freya has beaten 5th seeded Naiktha Bains.

Amanda Carreras' rare trip to the UK ended in a first round defeat to Angelica Blake, who now has British nationality.

Only other Brit winner so far (2 matches still in progress) is Sarah Beth Grey, who just about beat one of the Morderger twins.

Re: GB chat - Woking W25

You could just about sum the day up as pretty dire. 13 involved, 4 in 2 all GB matches, so guaranteed 2 through there, and we've managed 1 through from the other 8, with one result pending (and the first set dropped). Gabi and Sam out as seeds, Naiktha too as Dodge says, but at least someone profits from that. Emily Appleton still can't win at this level, despite playing a qualifier. Barnett losing to a lower ranked player as well. Only Ali Collins and Holly Hutchinson were massive outsiders, so with home advantage and comforts, I'd like to think we could have done better than that.

Freya plays Sarah Beth Grey in R2, so I suppose there is another winner there. Angelica seems like a really interesting addition following her British Tour success the other week (to earn this MDWC) and beat Freya in that final, but she plays the top seed in the next round, so a tough task.

Re: GB chat - Woking W25

I suppose we can forgive Murray as she ought really to still be on her honeymoon.

Eden Silva is playing doubles here, having withdrawn from the singles a couple of weeks ago.

Yep, a pretty poor showing; particularly disappointed with Gabi who is better than that.

Strycova ~ Robson ~ Watson ~ Konta ~ Siniakova

Barty ~ Parmentier ~ Swan ~ Bencic ~ Vekic ~ Raducanu ~ Halep ~ Galfi ~ Riske

Sarah Beth Grey the last Brit standing in singles, having beaten Freya Christie in 3 sets.
