FI: Betty Stove (Neth)/Virginia Wade (GB) d. Greer Stevens (SA)/Pam Teeguarden 6-3 6-2

"I miss Chris as a friend, but not on the tour", was Navratilova's answer when asked if she missed Evert, who is taking a hiatus from tennis. The serve and volleyer has now racked up 15 consecutive wins on indoor carpet. Martina lost finals here to Evert in both 1975 and 1976.

Casals remarks about how this is the best she has seen Navratilova play, adding, "When she comes to the net, she comes like a blanket. I can't get it past her."

Billie Jean King, #1 seed in singles and doubles, retired during her 1R match, citing leg and heel pain. She will stay out an estimated 3 weeks to recover.

The most fascinating match early on was Tracy Austin vs Navatilova. At less than 100 pounds Austin had the crowd solidly behind her in the David vs Goliath contest. Austin won the first 2 games, but after Martina got her nerves under control she simply overpowered the young teen. Martina said afterwards that Tracy "makes us all look like old women."

In the quarters Greer Stevens finally wom on her 6th match point.

Renne Richards gets defaults from her first two opponents (Helle Viragh and Beth Norton) when at match point, each protesting her court ordered presence on tour. The gals are fined $500 and $5,000 US respectively, huge amounts in 1978. Before Aussie Kim Ruddell goes on court she is told that if she retires during the match her fine will be even larger. Helle and Renee were in a tense joint press conference. Richards told Viragh her retirement was "bush league and insulting to me personally," Viragh: "It's nothing personal. But we might see more of this, and it's not fair to the women players. It discriminates against us." Helle also noted that Richards is exempt from the Barr Sex Test by agreement with the WTA, a test all the other women on tour must take.

In an ABC interview Richards threatens to sue those who oppose her playing on the tour.

All this overshadows the winner. Amateur Pam Shriver wins the whole event from pre-qualifying-12 matches in a row. This is a record. No one can recall anyone winning that many matches to capture an event. It also marks the first time a qualifier has won a WTA tour level event. According to Dolan the qualifying draw was 109. The San Rafael Independent notes the field was closer to 200, with the event running 16 days in all if one includes the qualifying rounds.

Ann Kiyomura almost ended Pam's dream run early, being only 2 points away from capturing the match in the 2nd set at 3 all in the tiebreak. It took Pam 1 hour and 55 minutes to subdue Kiyomura.

Shriver ran through the final in 48 minutes. Afterwards she turned down the prize money of $2, 800 in order to remain an amateur.
