Wilcard Lena Sandin provides the local excitement for the week by getting all the watys to the semis.

South African Brigite Cuypers, only 23, has declared this will be her last year. She says she won't be swayed after upsetting Wendy Turnbull. Why? "It's the travel. It doesn't make me happy to travel 9 months a year."

Billie Jean busted her bahoolas off to win here. In the semis King-Ruzici tussle goes on 2 and a half hours. Vergie was only 3 points away from an upset win at 4 all in the tiebreak. An exhuasted King refused to speak to reporters afterwards.

In the final is one of the oldest for a tour event-the combined age being 70. Billie jean is cruising to an easy win at 6-3 3-0 when Stove catches fire. Betty wins the tiebreak. At 4-4 in the third King double faults to go down 4-5. "I thought I had lost it at that point. I was just praying to get a racquet on her serve." At 15-30 King hit a winning stop volley. A Stove ace brought it to 30-40 but after 2 hours and 38 minutes King claimed the top prize.

Only 1,400 came to see the final. King remarked, "In Europe, women's tennis is ten years behind. I wonder if it will ever be like in America? The corwds for us were as poor as when I first played here."

The men start their $170,000 event on the last day for the women.

November 2-4 Wightman Cup West Palm Beach, Florida, US (Clay) United States d Great Britain 7-0
Venue: West Palm Beach Polo and Country Club

US Captain: Rosie Casals
British Captain: Virginia Wade

Day 1

Chris Evert-Lloyd d Sue Barker (GB) 7-5 6-2

Day 2

Kathy Jordan d Anne Hobbs (GB) 6-4 6-7 6-2
Tracy Austin d Virginia Wade (GB) 6-1 6-4
Tracy Austin/Ann Kiyomura d Jo Durie/Debbie Jevans (GB) 6-3 6-1

Day 3
Tracy Austin d Sue Barker (GB) 6-4 6-2
Chris Evert-Lloyd d Virginia Wade (GB) 6-1 6-1
Rosie Casals/Chris Evert d Sue Barker/Virginia Wade (GB) 6-0 6-1

With Wade aging, Barker no longer a consistent threat, and few British junior hopes, the Wightman Cup has bleak hopes for the future. The goings on at West Palm do nothing to conter the impression. On the opening day Barker self destructs vs Evert-Lloyd, making 33 errors off her normally deadly forehand side and 26 off the backhand. Sue wildly falils at shots and misses her chance, as Chris was not at her best either. Rain then pours down on the seconf match as Kathy Jordan jumped out to a set lead vs Hobbs.
