Goolagong shows she’s near top form with her second consecutive tournament victory and straight set win over Austin. A bubbly Evonne said "I think tonight was the best I have ever played" after beating the young American.

Meanwhile Chris Evert-Lloyd defaulted in the semis due to her tonsils. She had uncharacteristically struggled earlie in the week, taking over two hours to dispose of Ruzici in the QF.

Evonne's win gives her a 28-9 edge in her head to head matchups with Virginia. Wade's only consolation is the match lasts over an hour at 62 minutes. After the 16 point first game went to Evonne she rolled through the match. Virginia opined of her 13 match losing streak, "It's a pyschological thing against her."

A notable early round match was Stoll-Fromholtz. Caroline crazy topspin and moonballs had Dianne in tears. At 1:45 in the morning and 2 and half hours of fighting she screamed "I can't go on anymore!" and retired.

41,903 saw the event (a state record), with 5,388 for the final. Theis was the first women's event to be televised all-week in the US on a local cable channel.
