Draw note: Per John Dolan's book the 1R May-Ruzici match was 4-4 retired-but the WTA draw, World Tennis and the New York Times all cite it as a default. The 4-4 retirement possibly Barker-Fromholtz. The NYT alludes to a retirement by Fromholtz, yet the WTA draw and World Tennis cite score as 7-6 6-4. Verify with a Philly based paper if possible.

The field is littered with the walking wounded. Ruzici defaults with a bad knee, Fromholtz possibly retires due to bad knee. Greer Stevens, whose knee operation in 1978 took 3000 stitches-is also hurt again. Even eventual winner Wendy Turnbull has a sore shoulder.

Kathy Jordan provides a huge upset in taking out Tracy Austin, the top seed and main draw for fans this year. Austin held serve only twice all match. No injury here-jusr poor play that in Tracy's opinion stunk. 'I had no feel for the ball today. I couldn't even keep the ball in play. Everybody has off days, and this is one of mine."

Pam Shriver chooses to turn pro at this event. After losing in the QF to Turnbull she said, "I must learn to control my emotions. I wanted to take my racquet and chuck it when things started going against me." After losing the first set 7-5 even a partisan crowd couldn't help her past the cagy Turnbull. Afterwards Wendy said, "I just kept running all the time. That's why they call me rabbit."

Greer Stevens comes in on a high-seeded #3. The bad news is her knee is hurting again. Virginia attacks constantly, ignoring an obviously injured Greer.

Casals looked set to make the final at 6-0 2-1 before dropping 6 straight games. Turnbull didn't win a game for 35 minutes. "I thought for a while that this was going to be the shortest match in history." After getting her first gasme Wendy's sore arm loosened up and she dug in. After leading 3-2 the Aussie won the second set. Wendy closed out a tense final set 6-3 by using an arsenal of dinks and lobs. This is Casals last singles semi in an important event as she transitioned to becoming mainly a doubles specialist.

Sue and Virginia's semi was another fluctuating affair. Wade led 4-0 in the third set when Barker came back to almost tie it. Barker netted a forehand to make it 5-3 Wade. A fired up Virginai closed it out over a tiring Barker.

Wade captures the first set of the final after saving 2 set points at 4-5 on her serve. 2 aces put an exclamation point on the first set. One more set and the Englishwoman would have her first singles title in months. The bubble bursts at 2-0 in the second though, as a tired Ginny (her doubles the night before ended at 1:40 AM) ran out of gas. "it was my intention to tie her out", Turnbull said. "I tried to slow the pace down, especially on her backhand."

Wade: "Of course I was tired, having played 6 sets yesterday and my doubles match lasting until early morning. But that's not an excuse. I simply was not able to concentrate on my game."

Total attendance=22,296-the lowest on the circuit this year. As a result the event is cancelled-not appearing again until 1991.

WTT is no more. With more teams dropping out by the day the grand experiment called World Team Tennis (1974-1978) is dead. Once the Europeans decided to throw money into the Colgate women's tour and rejuvenate the French the exodus began-with Chris Evert, still the #1 draw in tennis, deciding not to renew her contract.
