Serena Stars On Street Time Tonight
By Richard Pagliaro
Knee surgery has prevented Serena Williams from hitting the court, but tonight she hits the street. The former No. 1 is the featured guest star in the Showtime original series Street Time that airs tonight at 10 p.m. Eastern time on the cable network.
In tonight's episode titled "Fly Girl", Williams plays a reformed gang member wrongfully convicted of cocaine trafficking, who has just been paroled from prison and is trying to stay out of trouble. Street Time producers delayed their shooting schedule from mid-August to September in order to accommodate Williams' August 2nd knee surgery and rewrote the script to incorporate the injury. Williams' character, Meeka Hayes, is a former high school track star whose career comes to an abrupt end after she suffers a leg injury in prison.
Williams, who learned to play tennis on the public park courts of Compton, California, said she's a fan of the Showtime series.
"As a fan of Street Time, I told myself that if given the opportunity, I'd love to be on the show," Williams said. "I am taking this role very seriously, because I want to excel and because I have respect for the series."
The plot revolves around Williams' character as she tries to re-adjust to life in the New York housing project where she lives with her mother in the same neighborhood where she was caught with cocaine. The dangers of the street hit home for cast and crew during the shoot. While Serena was taping the show, her oldest sister, Yetunde Price, was shot to death in Compton, California on September 14th, about a mile from the public tennis courts where Venus and Serena learned to play tennis.
