Serena Williams Selected Player of the Month for January
February 26, 2003
St. Petersburg, Florida – The WTA Tour announced today that Serena Williams has been named Player of the Month for January, as voted on by the International Tennis Writers’ Association. This is the sixth time Serena has been selected by ITWA for the monthly award since the program’s inception in January 2001. Serena received the honor a total of five times in 2002, more than any other player.
The reigning world No. 1 accomplished her self-named 'Serena Slam', by winning the final phase at the Australian Open in January. She became the fifth woman to hold all four Majors simultaneously, joining Margaret Court , Maureen Connolly, Martina Navratilova, and Steffi Graf. She also became the ninth woman to have won each of the four Grand Slam singles titles. After winning the Australian Open, Serena's total number of weeks as the No. 1 in the world stretched to 30 weeks, the seventh all time high. S. Williams also won the doubles crown in Melbourne with Venus, defeating the No. 1 and 2 doubles players on the WTA Tour, Virginia Ruano Pascual and Paola Suarez.
Members of the International Tennis Writers’ Association select the Player of the Month. ITWA is a worldwide body dedicated to improving communication between journalists, players and the sport’s governing bodies to the general benefit of the sport. Strict qualifications are required for membership. ITWA members must cover at least 14 tournaments including three Grand Slams over a two-year period and must derive the majority of their income through reporting or broadcasting about tennis. It is estimated that the 90 ITWA members reach 73 million people on either a daily, weekly or monthly basis.
