Australian Open Wild Card Playoff

Thought it's about time we have a thread for this, since it's only a couple weeks away. So far 6/8 competitors have been announced:

1. Coco Vandeweghe 117

2. Jamie Hampton 133

3. Irina Falconi 187

4. Beatrice Capra 221

5. Shelby Rogers 336 (Reigning USTA 18s Champion)

6. Krista Hardebeck 396

7. Lauren Davis 446 (Highest ITF junior ranking of American girls)

8. Madison Keys 485

Withdrawals:

1. Christina McHale 109 Reason: Made the AO Main draw

2. Alison Riske 116 Reason: Unknown, most likely wanted to try and get some "easy" points by trying to qualify on her own, since she'll be a top seed.

Other things to consider:

Christina McHale will most likely get into the main draw on her own ranking, so there will potentially be 3 spots still open. If I got to choose, I would say they should go to Sloane Stephens, Lauren Davis, and Madison Keys.

Re: Australian Open Wild Card Playoff

i think it's a pretty good bet that Christina will WD. My vote goes to Sloane Stephens, Lauren Davis, and Madison Keys for the final 3 spots .

Re: Australian Open Wild Card Playoff

Rogers getting an invitation before Sloane I understand it probably being because Shelby won the 18s where Sloane was also entered, but Sloane should still have been asked before her. And don't even get me started on Beatrice, even with her R3 luck of a draw at the US Open, Sloane is still ranked higher. But the order they are asked isn't important, just that all that should do compete in it. Because at the end of the day, you being asked before another doesn't mean you're going to have a better chance to win it.

Anyways, I agree with Sloane, Lauren and Madison.

I believe the USTA was interested in having a few college girls participate in the playoff if they agreed to travel to Australia if they were to win the event. Perhaps Maria Sanchez, Hilary Barte, or Chelsey Gullickson?

I wish Coco would decline this like Riske did and plays the qualifying rounds.

Agreed. Top ranked USA junior, plus two pro circuit titles... she's earned it. She has been playing a lot lately and I think it's to get to junior top 10 so she gets the benefit of junior exempt. If she posts good showings at the Orange Bowl and Eddie Herr, it's well within her reach!

Re: Australian Open Wild Card Playoff

Although she has not officially been removed from the event, it's certain now with Szavay and Serena's withdrawals that Christina is into the AO MD! This frees up another spot in the playoff.

Yeah, i think the only thing she's waiting for is to see if any player(s) enter the AO with an SR

Maybe Julia Cohen could sneak into the new spot?

Although the USTA seem to do her no favours.

Re: Australian Open Wild Card Playoff

I think the USTA didn't help Julia much even when she was in juniors when she made top 5 and when she was top 10 in college she did not get on the collegiate team.
